April was another busy month for the Yeti. With Cryptopsy rolling through town and some outside distractions and professional obligations wavering my attention, I’ve had limited free time to explore the underground. While most of my listening throughout this past year has been focused on new releases for reviews and sharing on Twitter, things really changed pace in April. It was back to basics. And as a result, most of what I had in rotation includes some old favorites as well as a few repeat offenders. Sit back, relax, and enjoy some good tunes! Metal Yeti

VARIUS – The Great Tribulation

One of the best underground shows I went to this month was in the basement of a bar for the release of The Great Tribulation, the latest EP from VARIUS. With a review of the EP and a live show stuck in my head, my playlists have been laced with these guys lately. And while their first release also received a lot of attention from me, the higher production value and overall better song quality make for some great death metal similar to other Canadian beauties like Kataklysm and Ex Deo.

NOCTURNUS AD – Paradox

A few weeks back I wrote about the sophomore Nocturnus album, Thresholds, which was the last “Nocturnus” album to feature Morbid Angel drummer/vocalist Mike Browning. Although featured on the first two albums, Browning was out of the band before they even toured the second album. This resulted in the creation of Nocturnus After Death, which is essentially Browning’s version of the band moving forward. Ensuring success they kept much of the sought after highly technical structure and tone. NOCTURNUS AD are set to release a new album at the end of May through Profound Lore, proving that what is dead may never die.

COSMIC ATROPHY – The Void Engineers

While I didn’t listen to a whole lot of new music this month, one of the exceptions was COSMIC ATROPHY. After being turned on to them through a random twitter conversation with a member of the band, I’ve been hooked all month. Their thick as all hell riffs mixed with some highly technical writing make for a fantastic listen for fans of bands like Demilich, Sulphur Aeon, Chthe’ilist, and Morbid Angel.

CRYPTOPSY – None So Vile

The blastbeat party rolled through Toronto a few weeks back with everyone’s favourite death metal band, CRYPTOPSY, was a big draw for me. None So Vile and Blasphemy Made Flesh opened so many metal doors for me all those years ago, and the new material has been brutal as all hell. CRYPTOPSY delivered an amazing set full of all the essential classics and new favourites you’d expect. I still got bruises a few weeks on and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME – Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues

With Devin Townsend taking up a lot of my time earlier in the month, things naturally evolved into other prog listening with Dream Theater’s new album and one of my all time favourite bands Between the Buried and Me. Having seen them perform live so many times, many of their songs have a deep connection. Their albums Alaska and The Great Misdirect have been on constant repeat for days now. Enjoy one of my favourites releases from the band with their underrated EP leading up to the Parallax album.
