“Seks nagler i kisten” (“Six nails in the coffin”) is the second full-length album from Myrlik666, after their debut “Misantropologi” was released in February this same year, less than 4 months ago. This Norwegian band offers again a great dose of raw, visceral and uncompromised black metal through six tracks of that primal sound.
The icy riffs are raw and obsessive, the constant buzz fries the listener’s brain. Meanwhile, vocals spit hatred and bitterness, like coming from the throat of a tortured and deranged being. The anti-religious lyrics are an ode to darkness, death and rot. The low bass adds even more darkness and the air becomes dense, unbreathable. And the lo-fi drums have that classic sound in black metal: nothing polished, only rawness.
The album runs 24 minutes, and all the time the atmosphere is heavily oppressive, with a stench of decay and a constant lack of air to breathe. When I feel myself immersed in all this chaos and darkness, it’s like something insane yet liberating. A cathartic experience, and in some way an expiation of the sickness of this world.
My favorite track is “Høstmørke” (“Autumn darkness”), the obsessive tremolo notes playing again and again, the bass enhancing the feeling of desolation, along with the fried guitar in the background make you feel death is approaching… Vocals are like a gurgle, in a desperate attempt to trap the listener in a macabre spiral. And the rhythmic drumming smashes your skull mercilessly and turns the surrounding atmosphere into your worst nightmare.
The cover is a murky image that contains all the cold, harshness and dark ambiance that we will find in the music. Very good matching indeed. 8,5/10
