#SingleReview Plague Cathedral – Acerbitas Mortis via Zazen Sounds & Cavsas (Cyclic Law) by Pegah
The Canadian duo Plague Cathedral present Acerbitas Mortis, the opening track from their upcoming album To Dust You Shall Return, through a music video featuring imagery and woodcuts by renowned medieval and early Renaissance artists.
The visual narrative extends beyond plague as a source of death, evoking a world consumed by corruption, decay, and human suffering. The historical artwork reinforces the song’s bleak philosophical perspective, in which death emerges as an inevitable and impartial force that transcends earthly power and social hierarchy.
The video’s dark, oppressive atmosphere finds a compelling counterpart in the music. The vocals, in particular, convey a profound sense of heaviness and darkness, reinforcing the imagery and drawing the listener further into the song’s grim world.
In this track, Death is personified as a powerful, mysterious entity who comes for everyone, regardless of wealth, social standing, or spiritual beliefs. A sovereign crowned with bones and black flames, he stands at the threshold of the void, exercising an authority that neither angels nor demons can challenge.
There is a striking contrast between this portrayal and the historical imagery of the plague. While epidemics evoke fear, chaos, and human helplessness, the figure of Death in Acerbitas Mortis remains remarkably composed. He neither rages nor rejoices; he simply arrives, delivers his verdict, and departs. Neither cruel nor compassionate, he represents an impartial and inevitable force before which all earthly distinctions ultimately dissolve.
