Album Review: Victimarum – Seitsemän soihdun valossa via Signal Rex by Sílvia

Victimarum is a Black Metal band from Finland whose sound is harsh, raw, cold, with that inherent melancholy that lies within Finnish bands. Guitars play an insane amount of cold tremolo riffs and meanwhile, the bass brings more texture to the sound. The first track after the short intro, “Hovissa yön ruhtinaan” (“At the court of the prince of the night”) puts the listener in the perfect mood for the whole album, starting with a fierce scream and a hell of a riff, and drums giving it all with high energy. There’s also a great melodic work, and the bass sounds simply glorious.

With this first dive into the album, you are ready to be annihilated by these guys playing in a relentless way, as if the world was ending, bringing an entire universe made of icy cold riffs perfectly wrapped in stunning melodies, who’s not going to love this? In “Tulenkantaja” (“The flame bearer”) there are also hints of Finnish folk tunes, and I think it’s great that Black Metal can be infused by traditional folk melodies. After all, that’s where their roots are in many cases.

The album self titled track, “Seitsemän soihdun valossa” (“By the light of seven torches”) it’s a dark yet melodic piece, where string instruments create melodies that immerse the listener in a Nordic forest; I close my eyes and I can feel the freezing wind between the trees branches and the land covered by snow. There are some passages with that folkish influences, and the whole song seems to be soaked with the power of nature, it’s forceful and striking.

Vocals are aggressive, brutal screams pierce your brain and infect it with angst and despair, I can say the vocalist does a hellish performance. At some points, I feel myself screaming (just “aaaargh”, “yeeeaaarrrggh”, no idea of the lyrics ‘cause he sings in Finnish), because I can be carried away by the forceful shouting.

In general, tracks are boiling like hellfire, with the insane drums in constant beating, just check “Iäti vuoksesi” (“Forever for you”), daaamn what a tireless guy! And, the way the bass cradles the infectious riffs make my brain melt. Add to all this the barbaric screams and, woah… Hard to go back to Earth after listening to it.

I listen to these songs again and again and it’s like being surrounded by madness, the kind of soothing one if it makes sense. I mean… Do you ever think of brutality as therapy? In terms of music, of course. I can’t relax with soft tunes, I need the most dark and aggressive Metal to have my mind “fixed”, calmed, in peace. Because listening to it brings an extra amount of endorphins to my brain. And I know I’m not the only one… So, the union of icy cold riffs, dark atmospheres, fast paced drums and insane screams brings that kind of pleasure to me.

Victimarum has released a beast of an album, a proof that there are still new emerging bands that keep the flame burning. 9/10
