Single Review: Where’s My Bible – Ghost From The Past by Elyna for #MetalChronicles
Where is My Bible – Ghost From The Past (single) – “A healing and redemptive journey into the dark corners of the human soul”
“An introspective and brutal journey with Ghost From The Past by Where’s My Bible: Finnish Death Groove setting to music a journey of redemption and reconciliation with one’s own shadows”
Welcome to a new edition of The Metal Chronicles. Today’s journey is a special one of reunion and redemption with the shadows of the past.
Deathcore… Death groove metal… What’s that?
That’s the first thing I thought when I started investigating the musical style of Where’s My Bible. Because the name of this band is quite curious. The first thing you imagine is a group of Christians singing something similar to metal. Or maybe a band like Stryper playing with the name and aesthetic as a marketing hook, even though their lyrics are entirely Christian.
But no! Where’s My Bible has nothing to do with religion. No way! Theirs is Death groove metal… well, METAL!
From Finland with darkness and technique.
Hailing from my beloved Finland, Where’s My Bible is a powerful band made up of Pasi Löfgrén and Toni Hinkkala on guitars, Teppo Ristola on drums, Juho Jokimies on bass, and the amazing Jussi Matilainen on vocals.
Their beginnings date back to 2016 with their debut EP, “The Beginning.” Then, in 2018, they released their first full-length album, “M ‘n’ R” (Mosh ‘N’ Roll), which received rave reviews in their homeland and around the world. As part of this debut album, Where’s My Bible went on a successful tour of South America, visiting Argentina, Brazil, Peru, and Chile, delighting fans with their impressive technical display and musical prowess.
Lyrical prowess.
Their second album, KAVE, was released in 2024. Hailed by many as “a challenge to the genre’s prejudices and conventions,” this album delivered a catalog of masterpieces, among which today we’ll take an in-depth look at the incredible Ghost From The Past featuring Riina Rinkinnen.
A dark, profound, and redemptive track.
With a running time of 4:46, Ghost From The Past explores the internal struggle caused by the weight of the past and the constant ebb and flow between light and darkness. It reflects a landscape where traumas and bad memories haunt and torment us, even when we’re calm. They keep us from resting at night and rob us of energy, life, and sleep. There is no bright dawn for the trapped spirit that cannot free itself from the shadows no matter how hard it tries. Even so, the only possible way to be truly free from these ghosts is to face them, embrace the darkness they bring, listen to them, and welcome them like old friends. Perhaps then, the voices will fall silent. Perhaps, by lovingly embracing our whole being, including what we hide, these ghosts of the past will finally find the key to open the cell and leave, allowing us to finally be at peace.
Because often, to see the sun again, it’s not enough to wait for dawn: we must cross the long darkness of the night with our eyes wide open, and make peace with what dwells within it.
The Healing Power of Well-Crafted Music
Musically, Ghost From The Past is structured in 4/4 time and a slow, Adagio-like tempo. However, the relentless double bass drum along with the rhythmic foundation, offer brilliant dynamic shifts, alternating brutal blast beats and powerful rolls, adding layers of brutality, diversity, and power to the whole. The track also features razor-sharp harmonic guitars, subtle orchestrations, and Jussi’s impressive, demonic voice, whose desperate, visceral scream is capable of awakening even the most buried of the dead from the grave. This ignited tapestry makes my auditory memories simply explode: Dark Tranquility, Emperor, Amon Amarth, Children of Bodom, and even ’90s Lacuna Coil, thanks to Riina’s powerful performance. Along with Pasi, she unleashes an incredible vocal performance that breaks the musical mold and masterfully balances the thick darkness created by Jussi’s deep, honed voice. The closing track of Ghost From The Past evokes Viking tribal drums, giving it an elegant and precise folk touch, concluding a dramatic and intense adventure that demonstrates the genius of this band.
Well, as I have always found throughout my years, Finland never disappoints!
A Meeting I Didn’t Know I Needed
With their second album, KAVE, and their single, Ghost From The Past, Where’s My Bible, they make their mastery as exponents of Melodic Death, Deathcore, and Death Groove metal abundantly clear. And this is no surprise to me, because throughout my years as a metalhead, I can attest that Finland never disappoints me as the birthplace of the best metal music.
Now, I confess I knew nothing about this genre until now.
Or so I thought… because to my ears, Deathcore and Death Groove metal are a perfect and masterful fusion of Symphonic Black Metal, Melodeath Metal, Old School Doom Metal, Progressive Death Metal, and a bit of Goth, elegantly integrated into the whole.
And to tell the truth, I did like it!
My inner Journey – Final Thoughts
Now, I “dared” to listen to Ghost From The Past by Where’s My Bible because their current bassist is Juho. He’s also part of Night People, an incredible band that pays tribute to the best of Heavy Metal and which I’ve been following for a long time.
However, beyond the reasons, listening to this track was like a reunion, a journey back and a reconciliation with those darkest parts of myself, with those ghosts I left behind the curtain for years because I didn’t want to see them.
For much of my life, the brightest power metal has been the genre that has accompanied me every day, giving me energy and hope. But Where’s My Bible and its single Ghost From The Past personify that journey back to my shadows, which I now look at without fear or rejection, but with honesty and affection.
These Finnish masters make me see that those ghosts of the past are also part of my being, and that they deserve to be heard, seen, and welcomed with love.
And without a doubt, this single is the best companion for this wonderful journey of healing and redemption. 10/10
