Well I don’t think they’ll be playing this at your local parish.
Oh Sludge Metal, how do I love thee. Let me count the ways:
- Existential torment
- Churning misanthropy
- Suffocating dragging tempos
- The weight of a dying sun on your chest
- Railing against the hopeless inevitability of existence
Wheeeee let’s party!
“Loud Wailing” by Sheffield’s BIBLE BASHER is four tracks of wholesomely grim, dank and pungent Sludge Metal. A perfect accompaniment to your daily commute, glowering at your fellow metro passengers, your scowls hidden underneath your cartoon elephant face-mask.
For the most part the delivery is crushingly slow, with only the hypnotic bass-driven “Plagued” picking up the pace, for a more outright aggressive attack. Everywhere else it’s a creeping, crushing, suffocating merry go round of misery.
Opening track “So Samson Sang” starts with a rabid preachery intro. A huge, enveloping bass sound, crisp, simple plodding drums. Slow, heavy like a dying bear crawling through the forest coming to take a bite out of you while it has the strength. Alternating screams and roars from the vocals.
“Plagued” has something of the MADE OUT OF BABIES Hardcore/Sludge to its bad-trip carnival riff, before it gets down to business with hammering your face in. And that’s all for the good, but it’s probably the least memorable of the four tracks.
“Burning and Blackened” goes from an atmospheric, eastern sounding intro into another slow, dragging track. This one is really evil sounding. Like OCKULTIST and possibly my favourite track. Here and elsewhere there’s a whiff of early SWANS and a touch of GODFLESH.
Final track “Sodom and Gomorrah” is as nasty and misanthropic as you’d hope from the title. Relentless crashing cymbals accompany undulating bass, a sickly laconic guitar line and tormented howling.
I don’t know about you, but all this wallowing misery is making me hungry. Let’s eat! 8/10 Tom Boatman
