The Lumberjack Feedback are an instrumental quintet from Lille, France, who on April 26th will be releasing their second full-length album “Mere Mortals”. The band creates their intensely heavy, doom/ sludge sound with twin guitars, twin drums, and one thick, low and heavy bass.

This album is mesmerising, the rhythmic architecture throughout “Mere Mortals” is so powerful that as it hammered through my bones I was almost thrown into cardiac arrhythmia. On my first listen-through I found myself entirely hypnotised for the 48 minute run-time, due to the deep droning tones, fuzzy sludge, and thunderous drums. The production value is high, which creates some much appreciated clarity in the dark gloomy fuzz. Each instrument is pushed forward in the mix and avoids being drowned in a soup of dense sound.

Of the seven tracks there are a few clear standouts. “Kill! Kill! Kill! Die! Die! Die!” which is oozing with super-catchy riffs, melodies and captivating switches in tempo. This track is short and sweet and a shining example of what the band has to offer. “New Order (of the ages)” Parts I and 2 are also noteworthy tracks. Here the drums lurch forth and transition through clear primal-like rhythms, thunderous rolling, to structured marching beats. All of this is enveloped by heavy riffs and walls of fuzz, distortion, and feedback, which is only ever pierced by the occasional eerie high-end wail of a guitar. Track six “A White Horse (called Death)” also caught my attention being slower, sombre and more melancholy than previous tracks, evoking more classic-doom vibes.

The Lumberjack Feedback possess something unique, and with “Mere Mortals” they offer up a healthy slice of succulent instrumental doom oozing with sweet sludgy goodness. 7/10 Proua Metallist.
