#AlbumReview: Zealot Cult – Psalms of Filth via Awakening Records by Sílvia
I first knew the Irish band Zealot Cult in an unexpected way -and this is usually the way I find great stuff, by surprise-. I listened, I liked it and I decided to review the album, as they deliver very energetic death metal and I always enjoy a great dose of filthy riffs, rotting vocals and pummeling drums.
“Psalms of Filth” is the second full-length album by Zealot Cult, the band started working on it during the Covid lockdown, and even if it’s been a long path it’s been really worth it.
The atmospheric and eerie intro and outro are a good wrapping of the high-octane content in the 8 songs, no fluff allowed here, only pure and unrelenting death metal, old-school style. This is like a very spicy candy, consume it at your own risk!
The riffs are repetitive and get stuck in your head, they crawl through your brain right from the first listen, like stubborn worms. Lead guitar has also a very important role in these songs, playing some impressive solos. And the bass is not less important, I’m enjoying those low vibrant notes that are played and noticed along with the guitars assault.
Vocals are gritty and perfectly fitting the dark atmosphere created in these songs, you can feel how powerful it is. At times backing vocals are added to put emphasis in the choruses, and the result is more intense.
Drums are relentless, very fast and strong, the guy is very good technically. And he does a great leg workout with that double bass pedal steaming so often, with a damn high speed. Also, what an impressive display of beats, rolls… I wonder if the drummer has an extra arm or something. Even when it’s time for the slower sections, his proficiency is well-proven.
I’m mesmerized by the song “Psalms of Filth”, from the bass-driven long intro, going through all the brutality delivered by drums and the infectious riffs, and until the end I’m overwhelmed with all its intensity.
Besides all the weight unleashed in this album, there’s also great technical work in this old-school death metal offering. It’s not all about crushing riffs and demolishing drums, there’s something more, a very elaborated work and also passion and dedication.
The artwork was made by Paolo Girardi, an Italian artist, and it’s an amazing oil painting with that powerful image of a semi-decomposed monk in a tattered robe, reading a book (of deadly psalms, I assume) and holding a rosary in one hand. The details of the painting are insane, from the half-rotten face of the monk to the tangle of snakes, slugs and rats that are surrounding him, and the intense color red of the whole image is a perfect choice, in my opinion. It conveys an unsettling feeling, like an horrific open door to the underworld…
Feel free to listen to “Psalms of Filth” for a great death metal raid. 9/10
