#AlbumReview: Void Moon – The Runes That Bind via Obelisk Polaris Productions by Sílvia

Void Moon is one of the many bands in which Peter Svensson plays. This musician is involved in bands that play death, doom or heavy metal, and having as a band mate the mega prolific Rogga Johansson in some of these (not in Void Moon, though). Peter also runs Obelisk Polaris Productions, a Swedish record label releasing mostly the music by the bands he plays in. That must be a lot of work, not only playing music but also managing the label, I see that Peter is a very hard working person in the music scene.

“The Runes that Bind” is a three song EP with a classic epic doom metal sound, being the members in the band Peter Svensson (bass and lyrics), Marcus Rosenqvist (drums, vocals) and Fredrik Theander (guitars). There’s also the collaboration of Joakim Strandberg-Nilsson (drummer of Dark Tranquillity) playing the piano in track 3, “Constellation”.

The lyrics talk about another world far beyond the Earth (and some questions that searchers of that world ask to themselves); the ties between different generations, from ancient times to modern days, and the unseen things that connect past and present; and some deep thoughts about life, transcendance and the stars that guide us in our path on Earth throughout history… Nothing in the way of banal lyrics, but quite the opposite.

The slow tempos of doom metal are, for me, perfect for appreciating each instrument in all their splendor. There’s time for that. And in this EP, believe me, all of them shine, and the production is so clean that it’s impossible to miss a single bass note or not noticing how the fingers slide along the guitar neck. Plus, the constant and rhythmic drum beats create a solid pattern in which the songs develop.

The vocals are clean and they have a special vibration -sometimes sounding deep and resonant, while at other times it is like a chronicler narrating transcendental stories. The last song, “Constellation”, has a very special atmosphere due to the piano and the gloomy vibes it conveys. Vocals sound more solemn in the parts where the piano is playing alone, and I like the way the bass resonates and highlights the guitar work, be it at the classic sounding riffs or when the lead takes control for a while.

There’s an overall good work in these three songs, instrumental, vocal and also in terms of composition. The guitar solo in “Orphans of the Sky” shines, the intro of “The Runes that Bind” brings a special and dark reflective moment that returns at the end of the song, and I’ve already said how special “Constellation” is. Very good doom metal with meaningful lyrics. 8,5/10
