#SingleReview: Hangover in Minsk – Bones & Bonds via Prophecy Productions for #METALMOMENTUM by Ioana

Having been once again late to the party (pun intended), I finally have the chance to sit with Hangover in Minsk’s latest track, “Bones & Bonds”, a song which’s appearance certainly surprised me, as the band have only last year put out their debut full-length, and one I hold in high regard, that being the Party is Over album. Moreover, the members had also released Vyraj, with their main band, Dymna Lotva, so to say they are prolific musicians would be an understatement. But back to the song…

Musically, “Bones & Bonds” continues is the vein of the band’s previous material, involving a blend of DSBM, black ‘n’ roll, and elements of post metal. Subject matter wise, Hangover in Minsk have described it as their most depressing song thus far, accompanying said description with the question: “Do you also feel as if time is stealing all that you have?”… That’s one way to open a new musical chapter. And that also should communicate to everyone that the song you are about to hear is nothing short of gut-wrenching.

The song’s minimalist instrumentation, centered around two main riffs, and a classic structure of verse, bridge, chorus, allows the listener to sink into the soundscape almost immediately, right as the vocal performance takes over, refusing to hold anything back. The overlapping clean and harsh vocals give it a very raw, emotional quality that comes off as genuinely tormented, the agony in each word being audible. This contrasts the guitar, which at times comes off as almost gentle, given there are quite a few passages that lean more towards a clean sound, devoid of distortion. As far as the mood is concerned, it hit me quite hard, especially the chorus parts, however, there was something that kept me from resonating with the track completely. Given my familiarity with the themes, I found it to be more comforting than disturbing, kind of like a manifestation of an oddly specific thought that keeps roaming my mind.

All in all “Bones & Bonds” is a song I appreciate and certainly a worthy follow-up of Party is Over. Time will tell what Hangover in Minsk is going to bring forward next, but if this song is meant to indicate anything, I have a feeling whatever comes will be great. 9/10
