Eternal Mourn is a new Italian death/doom metal band, but they didn’t appear out of nowhere: their members are and have been in other bands (Extirpation, Morbus Grave, Woundead, Araphel, Black Oath…), so they know what they’re doing. Well, let’s see what this album is about…
Clocking at less than 23 minutes and consisting of three tracks of more or less the same length, this is an enjoyable trip through the death/doom genre, with reminiscences of the past, noticeable in the guitar harmonies and in some riffs. The guitars opening in “Embracing Tragedy”, for example: this intro has a very classic sound.
Guitars, yes… they do a great job all through this EP, entwining perfectly together and also shining and standing out a lot of times. The riffs are clean and well executed, and when the lead guitar plays it’s usually in a sad tone. This is what these three songs convey: a dark and melancholic atmosphere, which is enhanced by the cavernous voice and the bass notes in the background that are always there, sometimes even claiming the spotlight.
Drums go through different patterns; at times playing slow rhythms, other times playing at a more powerful pace, but always solid. When drums are playing the slower parts in the songs, it’s when the ambiance goes more somber. There are multiple changes of pace through this album, so emotions fluctuate and the listener’s soul can shrink or expand depending on the moment.
My favorite track is “Embracing Tragedy”, it has a dramatic feel in the beginning and the vocals are very deep and dark. When half the song has passed, it makes a turn into a more dynamic rhythm, with the drums being more powerful and guitars playing an emotional solo just before the explosive ending. Very good.
Really eager about what this band will deliver in the future, this is a very promising start! 8/10
