Thronehammer rise from the depths like a monolith forged from ancient stone and rusted steel – colossal, bleak and crushing beyond measure. Formed in 2012 by Stuart West, the German-British band has steadily evolved from its epic doom roots into something far more expansive. As founder and creative driving force behind THRONEHAMMER, West continues to shape the band’s unmistakable identity through a vision that embraces both tradition and fearless progression.
Drawing inspiration from the war-torn heaviness of Bolt Thrower, the melancholy of Katatonia and Anathema, and the emotional depth of Paradise Lost, Thronehammer have forged a sound of their own – monumental, immersive and emotionally charged. Driven by Katharina Gillham’s commanding voice, the band conjures towering rituals of despair, pathos and destructive beauty.
At the heart of Thronehammer lies the thunderous rhythm section of drummer Markus Ströhlein and bassist Uwe “Void”, whose relentless interplay provides the foundation for the band’s crushing weight. Above it unfolds the dynamic interaction of three distinct guitar voices: Stuart West’s gift for melancholic melodies and epic dramaturgy, Tobias Utz’s razor-sharp leads, and Daniel Ringl’s characteristic dissonances and atmospheric textures, adding new dimensions of tension and experimentation.
Although Thronehammer emerged from the doom metal underground, the traditional genre label no longer fully captures the breadth of the band’s musical identity. Blending epic doom with post-rock atmospheres, cinematic scope and moments of overwhelming extremity, the band has evolved into a force that transcends stylistic boundaries without sacrificing the emotional gravity at the core of its sound.
Over the years, Thronehammer have established themselves as a formidable presence within the European metal underground. The band has appeared at renowned festivals including Alcatraz Festival, Rock Hard Festival, Hammer of Doom, Keep It Low Festival and Stoned From The Underground Festival, while sharing stages with Coroner, Messiah, Lord Vicar, Amorphis, Unleashed, Brutus and Orange Goblin. In 2024, Thronehammer were nominated at the Metal Hammer Awards in the categories “Rising Star” and “Album of the Year”, further underlining the band’s growing international recognition.
Set for release on October 9th, 2026 through Supreme Chaos Records, “Slay | Kill | Erase” marks Thronehammer‘s most ambitious work to date. Spanning eight songs and a total running time of 74 minutes, the album ventures deeper into atmospheric and post-rock territory while retaining the crushing intensity that has become the band’s trademark. Featuring guest vocals by Max Hemmann of Motorowl, Slay | Kill | Erase stands as a bold statement from a band that continues to redefine itself without losing sight of its essence.
Perhaps the term “doom metal” has simply become too narrow to describe what Thronehammer have become. What remains is the band’s unmistakable ability to transform crushing heaviness, haunting beauty and cinematic grandeur into music that feels timeless, immersive and utterly their own.
