Single Review: Leila Abdul-Rauf – Eros Anima via 20 Buck Spin for #METALMOMENTUM by Pegah
Last week, Leila Abdul-Rauf unveiled a new single from her forthcoming album “Andros Insidivm”, released via the 20 Buck Spin label. The album’s title reflects her stated intent to deliver her “darkest and most confrontational material to date”, tracing a movement toward reclaiming what has long been abandoned.
“Eros Anima”, the third track of the upcoming album, encompasses the concept of Eros and Anima articulated by the Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung. Eros represents the principle of relationship, connection, and love—a vital, life-giving force often understood as the “maternal” energy embodied by the anima within the masculine psyche. In turn, the anima signifies the inner, unconscious feminine presence in a man, shaping his emotional depth, intuition, and capacity for relatedness.
These concepts are further reflected in the cover art, which appears to evoke the inner, unconscious strata of the self, portraying a deeply introspective and symbolic landscape. At its center, the image of an eye looms above—symbolizing knowledge, consciousness, and a sense of divine protection. It is visually and thematically linked to the figure of a mother holding her child, embodying care, intimacy, and shelter. The falling tear, meanwhile, carries connotations of grief, resilience, and the pain of loss, gesturing toward the hardships endured across a lifetime.
“Eros Anima” opens with a ritualistic, atmospheric intensity, where the female vocal dominates the composition, carrying a distinctly feminine presence that channels both vulnerability and quiet strength. At the midpoint of the track, the emergence of choral layers and multiple voices intensifies its ritualistic atmosphere, expanding the sonic space into something more immersive and transcendent.
In this sense, “Eros Anima” bridges the unconscious and the corporeal. It is a work that does not seek resolution, but rather invites the listener to dwell within its tensions, tracing the fragile interplay between love, loss, and the enduring impulse to reclaim what has been forgotten. 8.5/10
