Album Review: Wolvennest – Procession via Consouling Sound by Consanguineus

Wolvennest first appeared on my radar years ago when they announced a collaboration with Der Blutharsch. That announcement immediately sparked my curiosity, but it would take almost two more years before I truly got to know the band – through their impressive debut album Vortex.

From that moment on, I was completely drawn into their musical universe. The hypnotic blend of dark psychedelia, ritualistic sounds, and heavy, repetitive riffs proved to be something that could never just play in the background. It’s music that pulls you in, conjuring an atmosphere both oppressive and enchanting. Their later releases all found their way into my record collection without exception, each album adding a new layer to their mysterious, almost esoteric body of work.

And now there’s Procession, this time not released on Germany’s Ván Records but on Belgium’s Consouling Sounds – a label already known for artists such as Amenra, Alkerdeel, and Wiegedood.

Thanks to the distinctive voice of Shazzula, the first few tracks carry a pronounced eighties new wave feel. There is, of course, nothing wrong with that, but the rich musical arrangements unmistakably stamp them with the signature Wolvennest sound. The combination of her vocals with the dark instrumentation creates an atmosphere that feels at once familiar and alienating, as though the listener is being pulled back and forth between melancholy and mysticism.

At the album’s midpoint comes an absolute highlight: the magnificent French-language “Déchamè”. Opening with a mesmerizing theremin intro, the track immediately transports the listener to another dimension and almost seems to cleave the album in two. Released as a single, this song takes the shape of a sorrowful, doomy chanson where heaviness and fragility are held in perfect balance. The emotional intensity of Shazzula’s vocals comes fully into its own here, lifting the piece to an almost sacred height.

Another definite highlight is the nearly black-metal-tinged “Hunters”, where Wolvennest reveals its harsher and even darker side. The song is propelled forward by massive, layered guitar walls that crash down like a freezing storm, while the icy vocals add an extra dimension of coldness and menace. Repetitive, trance-inducing rhythms amplify the intensity, turning “Hunters” into one of the most haunting and immersive moments on the album.

Where earlier tracks mainly balance between mysticism and melancholy, “Hunters” takes a more aggressive approach, brushing right up against the very essence of black metal. It’s precisely this contrasting energy that makes the song so powerful: a dark catharsis that underscores Wolvennest’s versatility within its own universe.

Another such display of versatility comes with the almost Diamanda Galás-like “Tarantism”. Its ritualistic atmosphere allows you to briefly drift away into unexplored regions of your subconscious.

Procession is nothing less than a milestone in Wolvennest’s musical journey, showcasing the caliber and craftsmanship at play here. This is one for the year’s best-of list. 9/10
