“Illumination Phases” is the latest album by Italy-based artist Onasander, created in collaboration with German artist Ronny Engmann (RNGMNN). The album was released via Winter-Light on July 10. The cover art, designed by Patricia Schoonenberg, depicts the contrast and collision between light and darkness, even the emergence of something greater from their encounter. As the title implies, the album revolves around the concept of illumination—the dispelling of darkness to reveal the truth beyond. Yet illumination is presented here as a cycle rather than a linear process, with each track representing a different phase within it. The concept can also be interpreted as a symbol of spiritual growth and a gradual awakening to deeper knowledge and wisdom.

Somewhere completely embraced by darkness, something is taking shape, and a great change is about to occur—“A New Beginning”. This was my immediate impression upon hearing the epic opening and the vast soundscape that follows. It could hardly have been a more fitting start to the album. Through the next track, there is a noticeable shift in the tone and colour of the sonic layers. In contrast to the cold stillness of the previous composition, “On the Trail of the Silver Path” introduces a sense of flow and movement, carrying the listener forward while the uncertainty of the unknown continues to linger. But one thing is certain: the journey toward self-awareness is about to begin.

The first signs of illumination gradually begin to emerge, narrow, delicate sounds echo within the vast drones, resembling thin lines of light borning from the darkness. “In the Glow of Halflight” marks another stage of the journey, embodying the inner light of consciousness as it gradually begins to reveal itself. Yet “The Illumination Behind the Veils”implies that the time for full revelation has not arrived. Here, the light begins to fade as darkness takes over once again. The soundscape gains more weight, while the delicate sounds retreat into the distance, as if the light itself is slowly disappearing behind the veils.

The next two tracks further emphasize the dominance of darkness, with the soundscape evoking a place far beyond the reach of light. In “The Awakening of Darkness”, the title itself gives darkness an almost living presence. The act of awakening suggests a creature gradually taking shape, growing and expanding until it fills the entire space. But as the delicate sounds return, light is gradually born from within the darkness. The time has finally come: here, we witness a shift from ignorance to enlightenment, as what was once hidden slowly begins to reveal itself.

The final track represents both the end and the beginning of the cycle, embodying the early hours of the day, when life slowly begins to take shape. The sounds resemble pillars of light in the heart of the infinite sky, which can also symbolize the awakening of the mind as the truth is finally revealed. 9.5/10
