#AlbumReview: Undirheimar – Utisetur I via Cyclic Law & Zazen Sounds by Pegah
In the midst of the night, when the light has faded and silence settles over the world, I imagine stepping deep into the forest to confront my inner self. Living far away from such landscapes, however, that experience remains more like a dream. But, thanks to Undirheimar’s latest release, “Utisetur I”, I was given the opportunity to embark on a meditative ritual in the heart of nature without ever leaving home.
The album title refers to útiseta (Old Norse for “sitting out”), an ancient shamanic practice traditionally performed alone ,in complete silence, and most often during the night. The ritual was believed to facilitate spiritual insight, communication with ancestors, and a deeper connection with the spirits of nature. Historically, practitioners would endure isolation and the elements, sometimes without food or water, in pursuit of wisdom and revelation.
The opening embodies absolute darkness. The glottal chants blow through the soundscape like wind moving among the trees, drawing the listener deeper and deeper into the forest. No matter how alone you may be, the layered voices create the impression that a circle is forming around you. Suddenly, you are no longer a solitary observer but the very centre of the ritual itself. At the same time, the whisper-like vocals feel like echoes of our inner selves, emerging from the depths of the night.
As the album progresses, it gradually reaches its peak, much like arriving at the heart of a ceremonial gathering. The chants grow stronger and more communal, resembling a collective invocation. It is as if hidden spirits are revealing themselves from within the forest. By the fourth track, however, the atmosphere slows once again, allowing the listener to reconnect with the solitude and darkness that marked the beginning of the journey.
“V” feels like another phase of the practice, introducing tougher vocals into the soundscape that are ultimately brought to completion by “VI.” Here, the revelation reaches its highest point. The weight upon the heart seems to dissolve, replaced by a profound sense of unity with nature. In its final moments, inner peace quietly emerges. Just take a deep breath, and slowly open your eyes… 8/10
