There are many philosophies and ways of understanding life from the past that have gradually faded from the modern world. Yet these perspectives often offer valuable guidance, helping us find clarity and inner peace amid the chaos of modern life. Rather than allowing them to be forgotten, they can be preserved and reinterpreted through art. This is precisely what the Serbian artist Shogun’s Castle seeks to achieve with “The Sacred Creed of Devotion and Purpose”, an album inspired by the tenfold path of sacred virtues once practiced by the samurai tradition.

According to the album’s Bandcamp page, “The Sacred Creed of Devotion and Purpose” is described as a fusion of Japanese-inspired neofolk, samurai dungeon synth, and kabuki ambient. Drawing heavily on the sounds of the koto—the traditional Japanese string instrument—alongside warrior drums and layered atmospheric textures, the album creates an immersive soundscape that evokes both the spiritual and martial dimensions of the samurai tradition. This ten-track album is structured around these virtues, dedicating each composition to one of these sacred principles. Through coherent soundscapes and without any complexity, it successfully conveys a profound philosophy, transforming ancient teachings into an immersive and contemplative listening experience.

The album begins with “Gratitude” (感謝, Kansha), a virtue centered on thankfulness for existence, one’s journey, and the wisdom gained through challenge and triumph. The delicate sound of the koto, accompanied by warrior drums, gives the impression of a ceremonial proclamation, as if announcing the beginning of a sacred rite. It feels like a ritual dedicated to the appreciation of life. “Wisdom” (叡智, Eichi) embodies the pursuit of knowledge, clarity of mind, and the ability to make thoughtful decisions. The gentle sound of rainfall, accompanied by the rising tones of the koto along with the presence of a solemn male voice, creates an atmosphere that is both contemplative and emotional. The track feels like a reminder of one’s responsibilities in life, encouraging reflection and self-awareness. The album continues with “Purpose” (目的, Mokuteki), a virtue centered on the sense of intention that guides a warrior’s actions and gives meaning to the chosen path. Here, the martial rhythm of the warrior drums, accompanied by voices that evoke the discipline of the samurai tradition. The increased momentum reinforces the track’s underlying message: that a life without purpose lacks direction.

The combination of the koto and birdsong in “Solace” (慰め, Nagusame) captures the essence of the virtue remarkably well. The gentle interplay between these elements creates a sense of serenity and balance, embodying the ability to maintain inner peace amid uncertainty, turmoil, and the inevitable challenges of life. “Devotion” (献身, Kenshin) explores the virtue of unwavering loyalty—to one’s master, responsibilities, ideals, or chosen path in life. It is followed by “Forgiveness” (許し, Yurushi), which shifts the focus toward mercy, compassion, and the strength required to release resentment. The presence of wind throughout the composition adds another layer of meaning, evoking change, freedom, and the unseen forces that shape the course of human life. “Endurance” (耐久, Taikyū) embodies the perseverance and fortitude required to withstand hardship while remaining faithful to one’s convictions. The track’s sonic character conveys a profound sense of firmness and resilience. Its steady and determined atmosphere reflects the essence of endurance and the strength to persist.

As the album approaches its final chapters, the virtues explored become increasingly introspective and profound. “Modesty” (謙虚, Kenkyo) emphasizes the values of humility and self-awareness, regardless of achievement, power, or social standing. Here, the sounds of birds and the sea intertwine with the koto and warrior drums, creating a harmonious atmosphere that reflects the virtues’ main theme. The next track introduces one of the most fundamental concepts of the samurai path: “Temperance” (禁酒, Kinshu). At its core lies the practice of restraint and moderation—the ability to maintain control over one’s desires and resist the temptations of excess. These are principles that seem totally lost in the modern world. Finally, “Compassion” (同情, Dōjō), which refers to the virtues of empathy and kindness, encourages the use of one’s strength to support others rather than dominate them. It is a principle I wish were embraced by those who hold power, for I feel that the world would be a better place if compassion guided authority as much as ambition does. 9/10
