#AlbumReview: Inthraced – Constellation Zero via Inverse Records by Sílvia

Oh yes. The long-awaited full-length album by Inthraced is finally here. I’ve been following this band since I “found” their single “Interstellar”, released back in 2019. Then I realized they had put out two EPs a few years before, and these are very good, but “Interstellar” hit me hard, what a blast of a song! I was listening to it on repeat for days, super excited to cross paths with this band, waiting patiently for new music coming from them…

… and I still had to wait a few years until they released “Neon Frontiers”, the first single of what’d be their album “Constellation Zero”. What can I say? I’m too carried away by music sometimes, especially when I find a band that’s new for me, and their music has a strong impact on me like this bunch of Finns do. So, you can imagine my excitement when I saw them on social media talking about their upcoming album!

But well… let’s stop rambling and get on with my review…

The opener song, “The Revenant”, already speaks clearly of what’s this about. After a few restrained seconds that serve as an intro, the song fully unfolds with all its strength: drums at full speed (but not all the time), guitars playing sharp and melodic riffs, and oh those orchestrations adding the epicness and sense of splendor that’s characteristic of this album. Also, the monotone raspy vocals sound perfect. This album has an undeniable Finnish sound, if you are familiar with more bands of this kind you’ll understand what I mean. It’s just, you start listening to the music and only a few seconds have passed and you know it’s a Finnish band playing.

What makes “Constellation Zero” spectacular is, in my opinion, the use but no abuse of symphonic elements. They have found the perfect balance between orchestral arrangements (courtesy of Tommi Ilonen) and the rest of typical elements contained in Finnish melodic death metal: ultra blasting drums, clean and technical guitar playing, catchy keyboard melodies, some epic choruses, also its atmospheric moments… This album has it all.

The vocals are fairly normal for the genre, raspy low screams, keeping the same tone all the songs through, delivering a very good work. And I must mention the stunning clean vocals in “Neon Frontiers”, that were driving me mad wondering if it was a Finnish musician I admire a lot doing that (starting with Hie- and finishing with -tala, ahem). But, crazy me, he’s not… It’s Marcus Lång, who’s also in the bands Excalion and Force Majeure. I’ll go next and check these ones too, as his voice sounds spectacular in that track. Besides Marcus’ voice, there are more stunning details in “Neon Frontiers”: the catchy keyboard intro, the fast paced drums that roll over you with no mercy, the orchestral arrangements, the deep pulse of the bass, the intricate guitar solo near the end… It’s one of these songs that has a special place in my heart since the first time I listened to it.

Even the bass has a great role in the songs, there are moments when it’s clearly audible and provides a strong and dense rumble, as in “Darkest Chest”, when in the middle of the song there’s a break and an epic atmosphere kicks in by the hand of the bass and the keys playing an intriguing melody, and those eerie orchestrations… This track has something dark and mysterious floating all around, like a spectral aura.

There are moments when I’m flooded by an overwhelming sensation of grandeur, epicness unfolds inside my brain and I feel on an interstellar voyage, chasing stars and escaping black holes, traveling through interdimensional portals… There’s a majestic and heroic feel throughout the entire album that makes me feel fearless, unstoppable, as if I could conquer anything I wanted.
This album is fantastic in terms of music and atmosphere, simply perfect.  10/10
