#SingleReview: Ki Barak Selem – Kidung Bhairawa Prabhu via Bali Headbanger Music for #METALMOMENTUM by Ask

“Not for the many. Only for those who dare to descent. A ritual of dissolution, where the self is undone”. These words introduce the Balinese extreme metal offering Kidung Bhairawa Prabhu by the one-man band Ki Barak Selem on the cover of the single. These types of warnings show up ever so often in extreme metal, but rarely are they as warranted as this one. My first encounter with Balinese Mysticism Ritual Metal is something I will never forget.

Right from the first note the Balinese heritage is evident in the melodic formations. The guitar sound is polished and well played, with a repeating rather catchy melodic phrase which is carried beautifully through the distortion. An instrument sounding like a bell is added which also flow seamlessly in the music. From there the ritualistic atmosphere slowly thickens. The rhythm falls into a steady two by four which pulls the body into a slow rocking back and forth. The interaction between the distorted guitars, the consistent bells and the aggressive extreme metal drum patterns is deeply hypnotic. A spoken voice repeats a message which I do not understand but somehow feel anyway.

The music moves in cycles, the intensity increasing so slowly it is hardly noticeable, but it is felt in the ritualistic effect. A mantra is sung by clean but unpolished male vocals, and the simple melody is similar to the guitar melody but not the same. The two patterns elevate each other, and the cycles of repetition go on and on through the eight minutes of the song. The experience is frightening. Whatever this music is inviting is not for the weak of hart. Or maybe it is. Something is urging the open listener to let go, give in.

In an interview the artist has stated that the music is focused on liberation through ego dissolution. This is rarely seen in extreme metal even though the music style lends itself well to this purpose. The overpowering repetitions of violent screams and heavy distortion can cause a tremble through the structure of a person, allowing something else to move through the cracks. Ki Barak Selem use this potential to the fullest by building the music in ritualistic repetition rather than the expected song structure, and by using vocals and instruments to induce a state of trance rather than to tell a story or convey a feeling.

The repeating mantra is devastating, especially when the song is played on repeat over an extended time and used for meditation. It is complemented by spoken word and half spoken growls which sound like prayers and incantations. Together the elements form a spiral around the listener, slowly inviting a trembling movement, opening for surrender.

For me it is hard to listen to this as entertainment since the ritualistic aspects are so overpowering, but for the less spiritually inclined person I recommend listening to it only for the interesting sound of the guitars together with the bells, and the careful braiding of traditional melodic elements with extreme metal vocals, aggressive drums and mantras. It is new and innovative, yet deeply rooted in ancient local tradition, contemporary local spirituality and in the modern culture of extreme metal. Kidung Bhairawa Prabhu takes a step towards a more polished sound from the previous singles, which were rougher around the edges. Either style of production carries the force. The power is in the structure, mantra and intention, not in the production or even the skill of the musician. I am hoping for a full-length album from this artist. I will make sure I do the right preparations before listening to it. 9/10
