Album Review: Avdagata – The Apocalyptic Aeon via At Dawn Records by Sílvia
Since the first time I listened to this album, I was literally blown away. The intensity of these tracks are enough to raise some dead around, I’d dare to say it’s one of the most crushing albums I’ve listened to lately.
Avdagata’s second full-length offering consists of 9 tracks of relentless Extreme Metal. It combines aggression, darkness, stunning melodies and an apocalyptic atmosphere in a natural way. It will take you just a few seconds to figure this out. The opener track “As Humanity Falls” may start in a very soft way, with guitars playing delicate tunes, but as soon as drums make their appearance, there’s no more peace. And the savage harsh scream that follows, damn, it destroys all traces of sanity that might still remain. What a brutal way to start an album…
Here’s the lineup for this album:
Henric Liljesand – guitars, keyboards
Sebb Drago – vocals
Janne Jaloma – drums
David Mauritzon – bass
Patrik Gardberg – lead guitars

“The Apocalyptic Aeon” has a sinister tone from start to finish, the songs are infused with a dark atmosphere. Guitar riffs and melodies are highly responsible for that, but also the synths here and there in the background add an eerie feeling to the music. There are some occasional female choruses pouring an extra mysterious feel to the songs, like a mystic enchantment.
Brutality comes from drums, Janne Jaloma is a beast, just check his works with Ironmaster, Dark Funeral or Night Crowned (Liljesant also plays in this last band), he always delivers high speed and perfect technique equally, a hell of a drummer! The intensity he puts on these 9 tracks is perfectly balanced, at times the double bass pedal is steaming in a frantic race that seems to have no end, and other times the drumming is more restrained, delivering a perfect accuracy with every beat, roll and kick.
Also, the vocal performance by Sebb Drago is insane, his voice is thick, monstrous, he’s screaming with fury and never loosens his threatening tone a bit.
Guitars draw a landscape of total darkness, be it with gloomy melodies and with those sharp and dark riffs that are like a cascade of evil. Yes, there’s a sinister and devilish feel in the sound by Avdagata, it’s inherent to them, their trademark. Liljesand does a brilliant work, along with Gardberg, who’s responsible for the lead guitar. And, what about the resonating bass, courtesy of Mauritzon, a talented musician that brings the deep pulse of the underworld to the table.
“Regnum in Tenebris” is one of the most alluring songs for me; it starts fiercely, screams are brutal and drums pound mercilessly, the haunting piano melody keeps me in awe. I love the way the bass cradles the guitar work, riffs in this track are pure evil and darkness. How not to fall for it? Also, “The Apocalyptic Aeon” has a bewitching atmosphere, a frantic pace and Sebb screams give me goosebumps. I simply surrender to his monstrous voice, it feels like a mortal embrace. And, keep your eyes peeled for the closing track, “Luciferian”, it runs at fast pace and the guitar solo at the end is outstanding.
The artwork was done by Nick Morte, it’s a dreadful image of an apocalyptic world that’s to come, it speaks for itself, a very impressive painting.
This album is violent, fierce, it explodes in your face and melts your brain; and, at the same time, it’s full of insane melodic lines that make you surrender to the beauty it holds. When you thought the year was almost over and no more albums could hit you this hard, well… you can’t miss this one. 9,5/10
