The album starts with ‘Possesion…’, an introduction to this split between Haunter and Cape of Bats. Its 58 seconds consist of what seems to be an organ piano and synth playing a downturned and spooky tune, creating a quite Halloween-ish atmosphere before the record itself begins with ‘Vampires Coven’. I must say that it definetely doesn’t sound as I expected, but it is still good nonetheless with its fast starting riff, the speediness fused with the high-pitched sounding guitar crafting an eerie yet energetic and malicious mood for the listener to enjoy.
The second track, ‘Exorcism of the Holy Spirit’, feels kind of creepy at the start, though this sinister ambiance quickly fades away as the whole instrumental makes its way in. The drum beats are focusing almost entirely on a single type of pattern, whilst the guitar changes riffs and speed continuously to maintain the much needed balance between sounds.
Now enough of Haunter’s part to this EP, it’s now time to see what Cape of Bats has to offer us. Their first contribution, ‘Stygian Dephts (Ode to Erichtho)’ immediately highlights the difference in sound between these two acts, as Haunter is focusing on high pitched guitars, while Cape of Bats’ work is composed of more distorsion and downtuning. Vocal-wise they are almost the same, with slight exceptions in some parts.
‘Frisson Nouveau’ continues the energetic personality of this record, and while the guitar is heavily distorted, the vocals are a bit alike to those from first wave BM, at least that’s how I would describe them.
‘Under the Carpathian Yoke’ ends the EP in a really punkish way, much like they refer to in the title of the record. To make this short, Haunter and Cape of Bats really managed to combine punk with black metal in quite the entertaining way. If you’re into distorsion and rythmically aligned guitar riffs, this record is definetely for you! 9/10
