Album Review: Eminentia Tenebris – Whispers of the Undying via Antiq Records by Sílvia

This album starts with a blast, literally: “Forever Etched” is a less than 2 minute track that summarizes what you’ll find in this album: fast drums tempos with the kit being destroyed almost all the time, guitars playing enjoyable harmonies cradled by some symphonic elements that confer a bombastic effect at times, the bass existing for real, and vocals sounding obscure, furious, menacing… I think that’s enough to arouse your interest.

“Whispers of the Undying” is the new album by Eminentia Tenebris, a Black Metal band from France formed by only two men: Cryo, founding member and in charge of all the instrumentation, and Erroiak, who does the vocals. This is an album driven by guitar melodies and keyboards playing symphonic stuff, and as this is present all the time in the end it becomes a bit overwhelming. Of course it’s just my opinion. The production is excellent, with a clean and bright sound, and the overall result is quite solemn, even at the risk of being a bit too much so at times.

The thing is, I can’t resist music that combines fast drums and furious vocals with the beauty of guitar harmonies cradled by keyboards emulating orchestrations. The mix is really powerful and has a great atmosphere. Even if there’s a main sensation of cold that lies behind all that sonic wall.

In the midst of all the fury unleashed in this album, there are also a few moments of tranquility, such as the brief intro in “Beneath the Moon”, only acoustic guitars and some synth notes playing, until the drums enter at full throttle and everything is destroyed… I also love the sound of the pulsating bass behind the drums attack, it makes the song more powerful. And the folk-ish “Embers of Glory”, with the choruses and the more restrained tempo in general, it’s not a calmed song but it allows you to breathe in the midst of the frantic race that this album is.

Erroiak’s voice expresses a big amount of fury, like he’s dealing with an unbearable amount of darkness inside him. Some of his screams can tear me up. And it’s a good feeling, I like vocals being this intense, they can cleanse dark emotions in me. He can really scream his lungs out, the song “Echoes of Triumph” gets me mesmerized because of the vocal work. And also because of the catchy melodies and the fierce intensity, let’s say it all…

Solid and beautiful album by Eminentia Tenebris. 8,5/10
