Album Review: Worm – Necropalace for #METALMOMENTUM via Century Media Records by Michelle

The self-proclaimed ‘necromantic black doom’ band Worm are back with a newly released single after their last record ‘Starpath’ (which was a colaboration with Dream Unending) and obviously, without any doubt, just by looking at the cover artwork you can tell that Worm have prepared something incredible for their future full-length of the same name as the released single. Combining symphonic elements with raw and distorsioned madness, ‘Necropalace’ might just be my new on repeat for the next few days, if not weeks.

Since Worm are known for having quite lengthy tracks, it is obvious that they preserved this tradition with Necropalace. While the shift in sound since their 2020 release ‘Gloomlord’ is quite tragic, it is well-produced and absolutely surprising. The first thing I personally noticed were the vocals, which take a more distorted and raw-ish path, yet still kept their balance between growls and high pitched screams, unique to the style Worm produces.

As for the instrumental, I really liked the fact that it kept the same energy and tonality as some of the band’s previous releases, yet with a more melodic twist which definitely caught me off-guard, yet still made me obsessed. If I had to compare this slightly modified instrumental style with a band it would most likely be the Spiritual Black Dimensions era of Dimmu Borgir, though this is seen from my personal perspective and considering the focus on synthesizer and piano/keyboard in some parts of the song. Now, Worm isn’t Worm without a guitar solo at some point, and they definitely nailed it in combination with the rythm guitar.

Again, as a big fan of this band, it is without any hesitation that I’m giving this a 10/10. Since I appreciate a lot Worm’s uniqueness, whether or not they are considered unique by others, this single just made me extremely hyped for what is to come on the 13th of February. Kudos to those who already managed to get a copy of the LP! 10/10
