Album Review: Shadows – Miseria by Michelle
Despite a not-so original name for a band, Shadows definetely deserve their place in the black/death metal scene, this fact being proven with their latest upcoming release – Miseria – on the 29th of August. Nevertheless, the agressive use of the vocals in this record emphasizes on the overall rebellious image of this band, only increasing my interest in wanting to dig further into this balanced musical structure. That being said, let’s start with ‘As Above So Below’, which is also featured as an already released single.
I must say, the straightforward start is something I pretty much enjoyed, mostly because of my shortened attention span. In other words, for me, this is already a pretty good start. The vocals don’t feel distorted at all, showing the true beauty of this track’s atmosphere. The tempo is perfectly executed, fast drumming and heavy guitar riffs clashing in the air like weapons before a solo starts dominating the song around the second minute. If this single managed to hype you up for the album’s release, hang in there! You’re in for quite the ride with Shadows’ Miseria.
The aspect I liked the most about this album are the clear sounding riffs, as in they’re not heavily distorted. I think this improves the quality of a record, unless you’re playing raw black metal or something of sorts. Speaking of which, one of the tracks that caught my attention the most is ‘Delivered From Sin’, the calm ambience before the fast starting riff fusing perfectly, creating a truly beautiful shift in the sound. Not to mention ‘Nadir (No Consent)’, which would also definetely join into my list of favored tracks with its rythmicness and rapid tempo. If i were to hear it live, my headbanging skills would immediately activate..!
Moving on, the start of ‘Spring Sleepwalker’ intrigued me quite a bit with the way it radiates melancholy and sorrow with its slowness, instantly shifting my attention on it. Overall, I enjoyed this album for the most part. I like how each track sounds a bit different between them, accentuating the originality in sound. 9/10
