Album Review: Disfuneral – In Horror, Reborn via Redefining Darkness Records by Sílvia

What we’ve got here is an endless concatenation of riffs, pure old school Death Metal riffs, seasoned with an impressive monstrous vocal register and with those low notes able to shake your guts, all cradled by drums that go fast when it’s needed, and also keep up the tempo when a total death atmosphere is building. Not to mention the impressive and crazy guitar solos, the overall sinister and gritty sound, the perfect balance between all the instruments and vocals…

Ok, I’m really impressed. There’s no need to invent anything, in terms of Metal all genres are already there, but what’s really needed is to be good at what you do. This has been said so many times and it’s 100% true. Not to pretend, not trying to copy anyone but to be true to your instincts and abilities. And believe me, Disfuneral knows how to play Death Metal in a classic style; listening to “In Horror, Reborn” is like taking a trip in a time capsule. I found myself headbanging in awe and checking more than once that this was a new album. Yep, released in April 2025. Awesome.

The vocalist goes really wild at times, screaming out of his lungs in a gruesome style, at times sounding cavernous and deep. And, did I mention the riffs? for fuuuuck’s sake, what an auditive infection! I feel my ears bleeding in ecstasy… but not only riffs, the solos are mesmerizing, this guy with the lead axe is really skilled, it kills me! Also, the high-powered bass is perfectly audible, and that’s the way I like it: if there’s no bass, no face melting. And with Disfuneral I’m falling to pieces all the time.

It’s in the slower passages when you are waiting for the speed to come back and take you to frantic headbanging, like in “Ripped from within”: when the calm enters you are craving for the brutal outburst again. And it comes, it comes and devastates you immediately.

One of my favorite tracks is “Extremity in Morbidity”. It’s the shortest and probably the craziest song, two minutes and a half running time and it’s totally amazing, a brutal display of pure Death Metal, infectious, insidiously crawling through your brain ‘til it’s totally destroyed, I’ve listened to it an insane amount of times on repeat and I still don’t have enough!

Disfuneral are constantly inviting the listener to mosh, one can’t be still when listening to these songs, unless you are made of stone, or wood or whatever material that’s not flesh. You feel the brutality approaching, like in the closing track, “Call from the Void”, a monstrous way to end the album, if you were still resisting this is going to shatter you and break you into pieces. The drummer was not tired enough from the previous songs, he smashes his kit brutally in this last assault. The vocalist screams like possessed, guitars and bass manage to create an ominous atmosphere of evil and destruction… What more do you need? Ah yes: to press the “play” button again and again.

This is one of the most infectious Death Metal albums I’ve listened to this year. 10/10
