Album Review: Deapscufa – Spellbound by Michelle

The calmness of the album as it starts is oddly comforting, the piano notes blending in beautifully with the harshness of the instrumental that begins shortly after. The tremolo picking is raw and really accentuated, the sound it emits being even melancholic, I would say. The song then calms down for a bit, though the picking still dominates the atmosphere. Overall, ‘A Dying Oath’ is the perfect start to the album as it pretty much already drawed my attention. Even the vocals are pretty powerful, the high pitched screams fusing perfectly with the ambience.

‘The Point of No Return’ is really straightforward, an energetic riff starting off the song, vocals joining just a bit after. Something that seems like a synthesizer also makes its way in, only adding to the atmospheric side of this record.
A small detail I have noticed about halfway in is how the songs are quite different from eachother, whether it’s the diversity in the riffs or the backround ambience. I know this is a pretty obvious statement, but a lot of albums feel like there’s just the same songs copy pasted over and over. Not that I’m saying this is a bad thing, I even enjoy this most of the time but I think diversity is pretty important in an album, and so Deapscufa really proves this.

Anyways, the start of ‘The Key’ is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful with the way the piano fuses with the small guitar solo, and just like the first track – after this calm moment makes its way in the instrumental itself. I also found the vocals throughout the album oddly similar to those of Hoest from the norwegian black metal act Taake, but this might be just me.

So to sum it up, this album is really worth checking out, because in my personal opinion I think in terms of sound and length it is perfect. I must admit I’m no big fan of long albums since sometimes I cannot finish them in one sitting. The album cover is quite nice to look at in combination with the logo, another important aspect when it comes to records since I think nice looking cover artworks draws the listener to see things for themself. Overall, this is a… 10/10
