Album Review: Defenestration – Mortal Cremation for #FutureRelics via Morbid Chapel Records by TKK666
I had the pleasure of receiving directly from the label the CD from the band Defenestration “Mortal Cremation”, a band from Canada and looking at the cover I deduced, and correctly deduced, that it would be a Death Metal band.
But looking a bit more and maybe “carefully” at the cover I thought, is it more old school Death Metal or is it a wave of gore Death Metal?
Both styles would be well appreciated by me, as they are both to my taste. But it was the first hypothesis and my head and foot was moving (Slowly, cause I’m Vintage, ahahahah)…
Doing some research on the band while the CD was playing on my stereo and enjoying the Death Metal that came out of the speakers, I discovered, as already mentioned, that the band was from Canada, that this CD was not an EP with only 6 songs, but rather a compilation of an EP released in 2023 and a promo released in 2024.
Mortal Cremation and Promo ’24, respectively, are the two previous releases by this band and are present here on the CD. However, the order of the songs is not exactly as in previous works, was it done in a way that made it sound better or did it make sense that way, according to the band?
I honestly don’t know and I didn’t ask.
The order in previous releases…
Mortal Cremation
- Vastum’s Rise
- Mortal Cremation
- Eternal Night
- Slave to the Steel
Promo ’24
- Spirits Blade
- Shrouded in Mystery
And the order present on this CD which happens to have the same name as the band’s first release
Mortal Cremation
- Spirits Blade
- Mortal Cremation
- Eternal Night
- Shrouded In Mystery
- Slave To The Steel
- Vastum’s Rise
Something that honestly didn’t affect me, so let’s talk about the music…
As I mentioned before, the band moves in the old school Death Metal genre and what can you say about a band that plays a style that is already so “beaten”, having undergone so many “rebirths” and “waves”?
Not very sincerely, sorry but it’s true, nothing here is reinvented, nothing is “voilá, a masterpiece”, “look, look, here’s some old-school Death Metal that’s better than what’s already been invented and reinvented and remixed, and once again remixed again”. No, none of that.
So what to say in these cases? In my humble opinion, it’s about what you feel when listening to a new release from a band that plays this musical style (or another style that’s been around for several years and/or decades).
This compilation is very good and worth purchasing and available in CD format and for what I found ( and I think I’m saying correctly, the EP and the Promo was only released in Tape format and very limited). Why? Quite simple. The Death Metal played here by these four musicians is very good and they know what they are doing, and I hope they continue doing it for many more years, because the musical quality is good, and quite honestly, in my opinion that is what matters.
Regardless of being “dated”, remembering band “x” or “y” or even “Z” and another band and another. It has quality, listen to it, support the bands and record labels that release what they really like and don’t go after “trends” or what’s “in fashion”.
I’m a dinosaur and an old man who seems to have stopped in time and listen to what’s dozens of years old? Maybe, but at least I listen to what makes me feel alive and this band made me feel that way with their Death Metal and as such, I leave here my words of support.
Without any doubt, I give it… 8/10
