“Bull of Crete” is the second single by Medusian, a new band hailing from Gothenburg, Sweden. They play Symphonic/Melodic Death Metal and I can feel the emotion that these musicians put in their music. For me, symphonic elements in Metal confer a lot of thrill to the music, and when it’s mixed with extreme genres it’s the best. And this song contains a massive load of symphonic stuff, for us to enjoy. You can also check the previous single, “Facestealer”, which is another banger.
In this new song it’s the sound of the violin that makes it, for me. It’s almost always there, sometimes in a more audible forefront, some others a bit buried behind the Metal instrumentation, but the frantic notes of a violin gives the music a mysterious and fascinating aura. When this is combined with harsh vocals it gives me goosebumps, because of the contrast. It turns out to be beautiful in a special way.
The guitar is tracing the lines of the main melody, and there’s a delightful solo near the end, clean and well executed, adding a moment of grandeur to the song. The bass sounds deep and resonates in the background, along with the orchestration, creating a fantastic soil from where the music flows and grows. And I can’t help but put my attention in the percussion, ‘cause drums are playing in a relentless way all the time, with no rest, not loosening, kind of a crushing succession of beats and rhythms. It’s not very fast at times, but it’s the maintained energy level what makes it remarkable. Near the end is when the beating speeds up and marks a brilliant finale, along with the high pitched vocals and the symphonic elements recovering their protagonism.
And vocals, this is a thing that got me hooked on this song since the first time I listened to it. There are raspy screams and growls, combined with clean vocals that have a bit of roughness, and also female clean and high pitched screams. Wow… that’s a lot, and the combination turns this song into something big.
This is the lineup of Medusian’s single “Bull of Crete”:
Mitchell Colbert – guitars, vocals
Isak Asplund- drums
Richard Svärd – bass
And there’s a guest vocalist, Mina Giannopoulou, providing the clean high pitched vocals near the end, being a plus for this song. Another remarkable aspect is that lyrics tell the story of the Cretan Bull, a beast from Greek mythology that emerged from the sea, sent by the god Poseidon under request of Minos, king of Creta. It’s a story about betrayal, wrath, lust, destruction, well, it’s part of mythology after all.
So, if you are ready to embrace this fantastic musical journey made of many layers, just sit down, relax and press the “play” button. 9/10 by Sílvia
