Total Teutonic Torso—the latest four-track EP by Nancy, France’s power-trio Death Whore— is a 12 minute gut-punching attack. If Ministry were a chicken, Godflesh the potatoes and Pantera’s The Great Southern Trendkill the gravy, it would make this EP a roast dinner taken out of the death-metal oven at just the right moment.

If you’ve mourned the death of Fabien W. Furter’s (Guitars, vocals, samples) last band—the great Wheelfall—you are not alone. There’s much solace to be gained here though, and anyone who enjoys equal parts aggression, tight riffing and a twisted sensibility, your only complaint may be that you’re left wishing the run time was longer.

Opening with ridiculous pummeling fury, the title track is three and a half minutes of pulverising industrial metal to bring a malevolent grin to your face, as you scare passers by walking to work. If you aren’t delighted by the little musical tip of the cap to Slayer’s “Angel of Death” and Today Is The Day’s “The Descent” mid track, what are you even doing with your life?

There’s no let up in aggression with the brutal “Condemned To Breathe”, while “Le Droit à L’Asphyxie” has some of the most delightfully gut-churning bass—courtesy of bassist Antoine Duffour—this side of a Justin Broadrick project.

Recorded, mixed and mastered by the band’s drummer, Pierre “Gorgor” Schaffner, the band’s man with the sticks also needs a shout out for his monster playing on these tracks. Start to finish, the drumming on this release is relentless.

All this can be yours on 5 May from No Good To Anyone Productions for whatever price you choose. Do yourself a favour and get yourself some Death Whore. 8/10 Tom Osman
