As my last review with Blessed Altar Zine what a high to finish on! it’s been fantastic writing reviews and highlighting bands with this platform and I shall miss it and the people I worked with! thank you for the music! but now Cognitive…
Have you ever been hit by a train and then wanting to be hit by it over and over again? no? well, I now understand the desire! This 5000 ton tramplingly album is so heavy we need to create a new element to contain it so it doesn’t tear time and space…. This record is one of the most interesting and intelligently written death metal albums I have heard in years!
The technicality and pacing are perfect, the right amount of all the fine spices and ingredients to make a mighty shredding meal! A heap of Tech, a splash of Slam a sprinkle of BDM and topped with a generous portion of face-melting riffs and beautiful solos on guitar and bass accompanied with piledriving drums and savage hugely ranged vocals to finish! OOFT!
The musicianship of these guys blows my mind, to tackle these sub-genres and make it original and engaging is no an easy feat! I banged my head more than woodpecker and pulled more faces than Rik Mayall did in his entire career!
The Production on this for me is fantastic and suits the genre and instrumentation perfectly and doesn’t come across and over-polished or overworked, has that raw element which I feel is VITAL for death metal!
All in all, Cognitive has pulled off an album that masterfully bridges technicality with brutality and binds it together with passion and Vigor making it a truly moving album! A monument to their hard work and will be on my daily rotation for years to come! 10/10 Kieran
