The object of today’s review is a perfect specimen of the vibrant Finnish underground, Morgal. Founded in 2014, constantly releasing material as ep`s, a split with Exitius, and one full length album In 2016: Kaarmesieelu, in a very limited quantity, to my knowledge their outputs have been ranging from 20 to 150 ex. This EP simply named Morgal is getting distribution through Werewolf, 500 ex. on 12-inch vinyl and a CD in unknown quantity.
What we are served with here is 15! Minutes of Black Metal. Making the songs all ticking in between 3 and 4 minutes. With no time to lose “Blood for Atazoth” starts with a single guitar intro with a real old school feel before larger than what not drums kicks in, a subtle bassline and more guitar, a great track, and those drums are just amazing. Not forgetting grim fitting vocals, some screaming solo`s as well. A kick in in the gut of a tune. “Mistress of Blood” though similar in approach, is more epic, but not epic in a normal sense, just a touch of epic. This is dirty Black Metal with a fury after all. The way they have mixed this ep is impressive, with the hyper speed and aggression still letting all the details shine, there is no problem picking out nuances. “Mistress” also got some Speed/ Thrash influences. The cold BM guitar for the first seconds of “The Black Goddess” is quickly paralleled by an 80`s style screaming shredding guitar, and it works! The BM guitar is the red thread through the song, but the large drums and the second guitar is highly creative. Sadly, this ep is coming to an end already and the finishing track gives yet another element: a few classical guitar parts. I think those parts could have been slowed down just little bit, or maybe just last longer, nobody would die if this ep was 16 minutes? But that is the only negative part of this song, “Warcry of the Wampire” is filled with emotion and the drums must be mentioned again, creative, larger than life, 80`s style, a pit “proggy”. And then it ends… WHY!!! Dammit, this should have been a release twice as long, at least! Oh well, you can`t have it all, this ep is excellent, especially if you like old school Black Metal but is not a purist. Morgal is after all: 0% MORAL 0% LAW 100% FUCK YOU 10/10 Harald
