#SingleReview: Black Cloud Man – Sons of Pestilence for #METALMOMENTUM by Sílvia

Black Cloud Man, the one man project by Knut Hassel (aka Tengil) has just released a new single, “Sons of Pestilence”. Knut is responsible for guitars and bass, besides lyrics and songwriting. And as he did in his previous EP and single, he counts on Kjell Bergendahl (Woodland) at vocal duties, and Anton Palmborg (Haradrim, Karmanjaka, Svartkonst live) playing drums.

Don’t get fooled by the soft intro, where guitars and bass play together a beautiful and quite emotional part, all string instruments perfectly entwined; “Sons of Pestilence” is a forceful and heavy song that seems to be an invocation of the evil forces, the dark ones, the infernal beings. At first, Kjell starts singing with a clean voice, as the music maintains its soft tempo and a mesmerizing guitar melody. But as soon as the drums unleash their power and the bass  pedal starts steaming, Kjell transforms into a devilish incarnation. I like this duality in vocals, being melodic at times and also sounding harsh and aggressive when it’s time for praising the Angel of Darkness. What a brutal change…

Anton does a great work at drums, switching from soft tempos to fast and furious outbursts when required. The pummeling drums have no compassion when they are free from restraint… And the bass pedal marks the strong intensity of the passages that have a menacing atmosphere.

At the soft parts of the song, guitars and bass entwine perfectly in a very melodic way, Knut is an excellent musician; and then, when harshness takes control, the tone becomes darker and the atmosphere more oppressive. At that point, drums are the driving force, while the dark and raspy voice is summoning demonic beings…

Near the last two minutes of the song, guitar plays an obsessive pattern and you feel trapped in a kind of spiderweb made of musical notes, until a demonic roar tears the momentaneous (almost) silence, accompanied by an explosion of drums, this part hits really hard. The ending is fantastic at so many levels, like a final incantation, super powerful and even within its darkness, it shines somehow. It’s like finally seeing all the truth revealing in front of your eyes.  9/10
