The Canadian thrash metal trio W.M.D. (that stands for “When Minds Develop”) have just released their second album, “Against All Warnings”, and if you love thrash metal and still haven’t listened to it, I highly recommend you to do it, ‘cause you’ll get that neck damage you’re craving for.
This is an album fueled by a great dose of energy. There’s not a single mild moment; the songs are built with drums beating hard all the time, guitars offer an insane amount of kick ass riffs, of the kind that make you thrash like a maniac and never have enough… Seriously, I’m enjoying this album and it sometimes reminds me of the old school era, when thrash metal was savage and pure aggression. W.M.D. have all this but with a clean production and some hints of modernity. Vocals spit rage and venom, the maniac screams get me totally in “Eyes of a Killer”.
Besides the “destructive mode ON” of drums and the memorable riffs, there are awesome guitar solos. The band has the collaboration of Kai Sakaguchi and Casey Trask playing solos in some of the songs. As I like to say, more is more: in this case, more guitar enjoyment.
And, what’d be an album of this kind without a bass sounding exactly as it sounds here: low tuned, very audible, and taking the leading role that is sometimes given to him, as in “Kleptomania”, where the bass sounds very prominent and savage. That initial bass galloping, and then the addition of drums, wow… But not only on this song: I’m mesmerized by this instrument all through the album, as it stands out a lot, and I love it.
I said before that there wasn’t a hint of smoothness in “Against All Warnings” and this is not true: the song “Already Dead”, even if it starts with high level of energy, it turns softer in the second half, including a beautiful guitar solo, to break with all the previous aggression… and serving as the calm before the storm, because the song that follows, “Painful Vengeance” is the final bombshell, the energetic closing track of an album that won’t leave you standing still.
Things can’t go wrong having all these elements together: destroyer riffs, high speed drums, rageful vocals, and a fantastic and dirty bass showing off all around. Well… this is W.M.D. and they annihilate all sanity around with their new album. 8,5/10
