#SingleReview: Dymna Lotva – Zory for #METALMOMENTUM via Prophecy Productions by Ioana

Okay, so this one is extremely interesting, and I am here for it. Dymna Lotva are preparing for the release of “Vyraj”, their fourth full length album, on August 7th 2026, and the first taste of this new artistic endeavor is “Zory”, the first single. And as the band described it themselves, it brings along a new, and rather striking change in artistic direction. Compared to the band’s previous effort, “Зямля Пад Чорнымі Крыламі: Кроў (The Land Under The Black Wings: Blood)”, characterized by a harsh, gut wrenching approach, extremely accurate to the subject matter, that being the occupation of Belarus during the Second World War, “Zory” presents us which a very different soundscape. The title itself, “Zory”, translates to “Stars”, and the name of the album, “Vyraj”, is the name of the starlit afterlife present in quite a few parts of Slavic folklore.

The music itself is considerably less “doomy”, and more on the mid to fast paced side, with numerous rhythm changes throughout. The melodies themselves have a very specific epicness to them which gives the song a grandeur not really observed before in the band’s music. The airy synths juxtaposed with the intensity of the music do a great job in creating the sensation of “open space” which the soundscape relies on. This is the kind of songwriting that never ceases to impress me, because the music and the lyrics are in perfect harmony to eachother. That makes the message all the more potent. Another aspect that impressed me, were, of course, the vocals, both harsh and clean, performed by frontwoman Nokt. Her lower register cleans in particular, add a specific kind of gravitas to the song, which solidifies its appartenence to the overall universe of Dymna Lotva, despite the stylistic shifts.

All that being said, “Zory” is certainly growing on me, and even though my preference for the band’s grimmer material is firmly in place and will likely not loosen all that much, I am excited about what the new album will bring along, as I have no doubt it will prove to be a great piece of music all throughout. After all, who can complain about experimentation when it is done this well? That’s how art evolves, in the end… 9/10
