Album Review: Harrowed – The Eternal Hunger via Dying Victims Productions by Sílvia
Harrowed is a Swedish band that plays Death Metal in a relentless, unapologetic, remorseless way. They do it by bringing that unpolished, raw sound to life again. And I’m sure you can name some of the bands that mostly influenced their music right from the start.
Their music is not new, and this is their charm: the ability of reliving Old School Swedish Death Metal, with their heavy riffs, their punk-ish vibes at some points, and delving into slower tempos also, providing their sound with plenty of elements to fall for… Yes, I’m old school and I fell for them, and I’m not ashamed…

Two are the musicians in Harrowed: Tobias Alpadie (playing the string instruments with fire) and Adam Lindmark (responsible for the percussion and the fierce vocals). And the 8 songs contained in their debut album are vicious, their gritty sound brings you back in time instantly. You just need to click the “play” button and, as “Bayonet” kicks in, you’ll fall for the familiar riffs and the harsh vocals from Hell. Drums deliver a vast repertoire of tempos, from fast to more calmed ones, and are played with great accuracy. The bass is highly audible and I love it. Oohh… This is a very promising start indeed!
A song that I particularly enjoy is “Ultra-Terrene Phantasmagoria”: from the raw intro involving dirty guitars and a bass that make your guts stir up, with all the sick old school vibes, the rotten vocals, the drums going from pummeling fast to more slow tempos naturally, and guitars playing addictive riffs and a crazy solo… everything makes me want to mosh like a maniac.
“Blood Covenant” is another insane song starting with fast tempos, with infamous riffs that make you shiver in delight; then, running on an obscure mid-pace in the middle that leads to the crazy end, with that wild guitar solo and the nastiness of vocals… Outstanding work.
The artwork, done by Robin Banks, is pretty explicit: the red hooded figure with eyes injected also in red, framed above by a logo that’s very representative of the music in the album, and below by a pile of skulls, well… Can a cover be more Death Metal with all these elements?
It’s hard to stand still while listening to “The Eternal Hunger” and, honestly: music that has this effect on me is highly appreciated. 8,5/10
