#AlbumReview: Skadi – Weave via Ominous Sounds by Pegah

All creation and the phenomena of the universe originate from a unified reality. All these elements are woven together, forming part of a greater whole. This idea of the interconnectedness of existence brings to mind the concept of the One, articulated by the Greek philosopher Plotinus, as well as Spinoza‘s philosophy, which understands all things as expressions of a unified substance. This is the central theme of “Weave”, the latest release by German dark ambient artist Skadi, via Ominous Sounds.

From this perspective, light and darkness are not separate from one another, nor do they exist independently of each other. Their relationship is beautifully reflected in the album artwork by Katharina Möller (Arsnecopinata): a central source of light surrounded by elements that reflect and transmit its radiance.

At first, there is only darkness, the absence of light. But as the track progresses, light gradually unveils itself, as if passing through the coloured windows of a sacred place. The soundscape captures this transition in a particularly meaningful way. As the “Filament of Light” emerges and fills the entire space, a choral voice begins to echo, with the company of another soundlayer which gives the track an almost Eastern character. This combination of sounds evokes the image of a sacred place that exists nowhere and yet belongs to everyone.

Then comes “Filament of Darkness”, the unseen and the primordial chaos. This track with its heavier sounds, encompasses the entire space, gradually overpowers the light. Then takes on a ritualistic atmosphere as male and female voices chant together, almost like a requiem for the absence of light. This continues until the remaining light is completely swallowed by the shadows. “Filament of the Void” follows with a cold soundscape that evokes the state of existence before creation, the absolute void. The closing of the album embodies the moment when a life comes to an end and passes into eternity. The voices here feel like a farewell chant accompanying the soul as it departs from this world. 8.5/10
