#SingleReview: Armagedda – Storm of Evil via Sken for #METALMOMENTUM by Ioana

Well… No one could have forseen this one. At least not me.

Armagedda is one of those bands that, if you are a respectable black metal fan, you know them and you’ve heard at least one of their records more than once. One would also be aware of their disbanding following their Ond Spiritism album, breaking the silence only for a brief moment in 2020 with the release of, Svindeldjup ättestup (one hell of an album, by the way, and the one that introduced me to the band). So, that being stated, I was probably not the only person who was shocked when they announced they would be releasing a fifth full-length album, which they gave us a taste of through their latest EP, The Storm. It contains two tracks, but only the first one, “Storm of Evil” is digitally available, and given that to this day I do not have a record player and I am also unaware whether there were any CDs of the EP out there, I found myself only being able to write about this first track, and not its successor, “The Sermon Never Heard”. That will probably have to wait until the album is out and I get my hands on a CD…

Musically speaking, “Storm of Evil” is the type of song one would expect from Armagedda anno 2026. The song sits somewhere in between the band’s older style, think Only True Believers era, but with noticeable influences from the later era. The result is downright cavernous, and here is worth mentioning that the cover art is a perfect encapsulation of what this track feels like: plague-infested, death-ridden, satanic, anything one could ask for. Some elements that stood out to me were, as expected, the vocal performance and the grooviness of the track. It is mostly centered around this cursed, mid-tempo d-beat that occasionally speeds up, creating anticipation. This works incredibly well in relation to the lyrics, which are blunt and blasphemous, once again reminiscent of Armagedda’s older material, but with a more controlled edge. At this point, the full-length could not be coming sooner. I was also pleasantly surprised by the clean vocals, which are done in an incantatory, almost liturgical manner, but are also rather rough around the edges, which made them fit perfectly in the composition.

That being said, “Storm of Evil” is, simply, a banger, and that is not a term I use lightly. It reminded me both of how important this band is to me, and also that, with black metal, you never truly know what to expect, or when a project simply decides to… rise from the grave. 8.5/10
