#AlbumReview: Mylingen – Det inre mörkret by Sílvia

The new album by Mylingen, “Det inre mörkret” (“The inner darkness”), is a delicious collection of 8 songs crafted with extreme care. I think that Viktor Jonas, the main musician and responsible for all the instruments, songwriting, etc., was carefully planning every passage, every sound, to make everything fit in a special way. So special is this album. And Eric Holmberg, the vocalist, does a great work because his voice goes along perfectly with the music. 

This being said as a brief introduction, I’ve been gratefully surprised by the use of the synths in this new work by Mylingen. There’s a big presence of a “cosmic sound” in these songs, well if you listen you’ll easily understand what I mean. Sometimes the synths depict landscapes from beyond Earth, that’s what they evoke to me. I feel like witnessing barren and desolate sceneries, devoid of any trace of life, yet possessing a special vibration that seeks solace and yearns for connection. Like in “Tomheten” (“Emptiness”), and when I took a look at the lyrics (had to translate, ‘cause they are in Swedish), well, something great made sense inside me instantly… 

Guitars play plenty of melodies, cradled by the vibrant bass, and very often enveloped by that special synth galactic sound. Drums are usually played at mid tempos, offering varied patterns and carrying a rhythm that never becomes excessive nor dull. The sound is strong and consistent, at times it eases a bit and that’s good for having a respite from processing all the emotions that the music conveys. Great atmosphere, dreamy passages… Very good combination of all the mentioned elements.

The lyrics in this album are dark, like tormented and hopeless tales, written in a very poetic way. Vocals fit perfectly with the storytelling, being harsh, at times bordering desperation. These stories are born from agony and suffering, barrenness and extreme cold combined… Beautiful dark poetry.

I love when an album can provoke devastating emotions inside me, it can be something cathartic, not only music to listen to, but to experience also. Not a soundtrack for listening to while doing things, but to be carefully immersed in it… and let it wash over me and make me drown in all its intensity.

The cover art is a fragment of an impressive and kind of disturbing image, a painting named “Christ in Limbo”, attributed to an admirer of Hieronymus Bosch. The inner sleeve and back artwork are fragments of the painting “The Garden of Earthly Delights” by Bosch, if you are not familiar with this classic painting, I encourage you to look for it and admire all the insane details and the bizarre scenes that fill the whole work of art… it’s really impressive, full of symbolism, biblical references, and images of Hell according to Bosch’ imagination… 

“Det inre mörkret” is more than music, it’s an experience. Dare to immerse yourself in it.  9/10
