#AlbumReview: Psyksoul – Psyksoul for #MetalChronicles by Sílvia

Let me start by saying that if you listen to Psyksoul and try to encase their music in just one metal genre, you’ll fail. Because their music is varied, full of nuances and details of different genres, all well blended in this 7 track debut EP from 2025. I’d say melodic death metal mixed with black metal, containing also some groovy passages. All done with passion and wrapped in a high level of energy, and accurate playing.
No matter the definitions, Psyksoul delivers a very intense sound. What caught my attention right from the start was the vocal performance; the beast behind the microphone is León Aybar, known as Valkan, also in the black metal band Nemoris from Argentina. In this EP, Valkan screams his lungs out with his raspy voice, totally on fire. A very powerful performance by a man with an impressive voice.
The two guitar players are Bayron Barros and Nicholas Middleton, and all along the album their work is excellent. At times the tremolo riffs overflow and build a massive sound, like in “Prophecies on my skin”, maybe their darkest and most intense song. Other times they serve some prog lines that enrich the music and add still more diversity to this EP.

The responsible for the low notes is Jürgen Kolinek, his bass is highly audible in all the tracks. A consistent and very well done work, not a mere filler, his instrument builds a net where all the instruments are enveloped, it lets the guitars shine and run fast, and the bass also shines in itself with its low register. Listen carefully to “The first of the last” and the short instrumental preceding theme and enjoy.
The drums know when to unleash all their energy and fury (as in “Prophecies on my skin”, welcome blast beats, double bass and all those cymbals), and when to play in a bit more restrained way, allowing the dark atmosphere to take over the song (as in “The way of wolves”). Brilliant work by Rafael Balbuena behind the kit.
There are a lot of albums released every week, every year, and we can’t be everywhere, of course. But, in case you missed the debut EP by Psyksoul, I highly recommend you to give it a spin… and more. 9/10
