Single Review: Melechesh – In Shadows, In Light via Reigning Phoenix Music for #METALMOMENTUM by Ioana
New single, “Periferi” from the upcoming album of the same name by Turkish artist Ekin Fil, was released a few days ago. At a time when the world seems to be engulfed in chaos—amid the relentless scrolling of news feeds and the constant assault of words, images, and sounds—this track arrives like a gentle summer breeze on a quiet evening. Listening to it evokes a sense of weightlessness and freedom, carried by ethereal vocals and distant echoes that seem to place the listener at a remove, as if witnessing the destruction from afar rather than being caught within the disaster unfolding around us.
We are living in an era where the concept of “collective pain” has reached another level. Every day, through social media, we are exposed to an overwhelming stream of grief and suffering, constantly confronted with the images, words, and sounds of the tragedies happening around the world. It creates a strange sense of proximity to distant disasters, as if we are emotionally entangled in events far beyond our lives.
As Ekin Fil herself explains: “Periferi came together during a period when I kept asking myself what this kind of music can even mean in a world where we witness mass suffering on a daily basis. These tracks grew inside that question, not as an answer, and not as consolation, but as a way of staying with it…” 8/10
