City dwellers have all sensed the life, the power, the autonomous identity of their home. They understand, on some deeply buried level, that it is more than a collection of buildings and intersecting streets…it is an entity beyond its elements, a tarnished, hungry god with a character that changes with the setting of the sun and the flickering into life of the street lights and neon signs. They know there is another world, a darkly different reality that lies behind a thin veil of perception; held in check only by a silently agreed refusal to believe in its existence. But a glimpse from the corner of the eye, a movement in the shadows not rejected and quickly forgotten and the door to that other city begins to stand ajar. And with Askdrömmar, Frozen Ocean are holding that door open and beckoning you inside…

For more than twenty years Frozen Ocean has brought us a staggering array of musical gifts; journeys that have taken us from the depths of space to the worlds of Tove Jansson’s literary creations, from Norse mythology to complex internal landscapes – riding on the wings of cold black metal and textured ambience – dramatic and visionary works. Now Vaarwel, the creative spirit behind the Frozen Ocean name, has returned with another sonic dream to ignite our imaginations and transport us to new dimensions. A work that draws inspiration from the writing of John Ajvide Lindqvist and the music of Lifelover, with lyrics written entirely in Swedish that communicate on a level beyond language. Askdrömmar leads us through a gallery of images, of haunting vignettes, to a destination unique to each soul that listens.

We enter the world of Askdrömmar along the moon road, ‘Mångata’ – both frightening and fascinating in equal measure. Vaarwel’s grim voice rasps over the dark, richly melodic music, a superlative demonstration of the power of black metal vocals at their most emotive. Already the light behind you is but a pinprick in the distance as the city begins to swallow you. The melodic, gothic doom inflections of ‘Bortkastade dödsrunor’ draw you deeper still and it becomes clear that these songs are creating an environment as well as a narrative and atmosphere – listening to Askdrömmar is to explore the secret streets of this dark urban domain. As you reach ‘Jag sover’ you are haunted by the city, surrounded by it, consumed by it, lost in its labyrinthine heart. The melancholy melodies twist through the night time world and the chosen language of presentation with its harsh poetry invokes imagery while avoiding definite definition. The liquid keys of ‘I lyktornas sken’ move between the pools of light that punctuate the blackness, creating unfathomable depths and innumerable layers, possessing the power to hypnotise and enthral. From the sinuous lament of ‘Köttkvarn’ with its bewitching despair, through the frantic fear of ‘Långt lopp genom mörkret’ to the beautiful, humbling conclusion of ‘Brunkebergstunneln’, Vaarwel has created nothing less than magic. Askdrömmar is the most powerful and affecting Frozen Ocean work to date – and that is some achievement.

Adorned in the superbly atmospheric artwork of Mosaeye Art (The Hearth Of Discordia, Shiningstar, Pyre etc), Askdrömmar will be unveiled by Apocalyptic Witchcraft on February 13th on CD digipak, cassette and digital formats, as well as an exclusive, extremely limited boxed set. Prepare to pass through the veil and wander through your darkest dreams…

Unpredictable, dangerous and extremely free of the limitations that what normal people call normal people suffer from. This Chilean band is like a Venom on acid using distortion and chorus effects without limitations, simply because it sounds awesome. You could find them performing a late-night gig at an drugs and alcohol-heavy occult gathering of suicidal satanist vampires who got together for a proper feast of flesh and blood before the suns first cold rays.

Created and recorded in Suicide Records Studio, Santiago Chile by Mr. Witchfucker and his co-conspirator Mr. Thoth, and mixed and mastered by EmilioGatoCosmico and the Witchfucker himself like last time.

The mix of genres and maximalisation of ugliness results in a smorgasbord of wrath, excitement and endless release. Horror-black/speed metal at its finest. For fans of early Venom, Bathory and even The Plastmatics, but mostly for people searching for something really, really exciting! Available on all formats.
