Album Review: Ugasanie – Endless Cold, Endless Darkness via Cryo Chamber by Pegah
“Endless Cold, Endless Darkness”, the latest release by Ugasanie, is a journey through desolation. Not only its title, but also the cover, the concept, and the overall theme convey a profound sense of coldness — the feeling of being trapped in a frozen suspension that seems never-ending. This mirrors how I feel these days: as if abandoned somewhere cold and dark, where the possibility of light feels distant, where you begin to doubt whether the sun will ever rise again, or whether the truth will ever be revealed.
Somewhere near the end of the world lie the Taiga forests, hidden within fog — guardians of concealed truths, and perhaps home to spirits that remain there forever. The opening track, “In the Thick Fog of the Taiga Forest”, embodies the sensation of being surrounded by towering trees, as the wind strikes your face like a slap while you desperately try to find a way forward. Every step is uncertain; the darkness feels endless. This same unease carries into “The Secret Path”, where you sense that a way must exist, yet you cannot find it — or perhaps something unseen refuses to let you. A heavy atmosphere lingers throughout, and the soundscape gradually pulls you inward, as if moving deeper into the forest itself. As the sounds evolve, whispers emerge — the “Cold Spirits of the Taiga” echo all around, while the distant howling of wolves rides in on the wind. With this track, the atmosphere shifts toward a more ritualistic texture.
From “Black Arangas”, the journey enters another phase, where the soundscape grows darker and even unsettling, while the ritualistic atmosphere continues to unfold. It feels like stepping into another realm — losing all connection with the human world and being drawn into a shamanic ceremony. “Among the Taiga Swamps” leads us back into the forest, yet everything still feels deeply supernatural; with every step, a sense of decay and isolation lingers. Once again, the next track pulls you forward, guiding you toward “The City of Dead Shamans”. Here, the sounds resemble wandering souls — those who once possessed the power to heal, but whose strength has now faded. The soundscape carries an overwhelming sense of sorrow, a feeling that urges you to remain there, mourning the lost ones.
There is another shift in the soundscape with “Intertwining of Worlds”, moving from the ritualistic toward something more atmospheric, cinematic, and dynamic. Here, a sense of motion emerges — of change and transformation. The borders begin to fade; the worlds of humans and spirits no longer feel separate. The wind rises, a distant howling echoes, and it feels like moving through a blizzard despite being unable to see what lies ahead. Though violently cold, there is a sense that this state is temporary, that it will eventually come to an end. Finally, after the storm, clarity returns. You can see again, and above the sky appear the “Lights in the Night”, perhaps promising an end to the hardships we were forced into. The soundscape grows calmer and more comforting, leaving us with a quiet sense of hope — the possibility of finding light. As the cold and snow recede, the forest begins to breathe again, and you feel reunited with nature.
“I Will Become Overgrown with Moss” marks a final transformation. Even if you are no longer alive, the path continues in another form. Here, moss becomes a symbol of growth, adaptability, and resilience — embracing what remains of you. Your spirit persists, echoing endlessly in its search for light and freedom. 8.5/10
