Single Review: Skadin– Autumn Nerves for #METALMOMENTUM by Ioana
Skadin is a promising black metal project that was formed in 2024. Since then, it has offered the music realm an EP titled “Fallen Echoes”, and a single titled “Wallachian Emperor” along with Vathsath. The band’s latest effort is, of course, the subject of this article, the track “Autumn Nerves”. Created in collaboration with Chilean artist D.P. Mann, the song offers the listener an immersive experience, yet one riddled with melancholy and contemplation, which is made obvious both by the title and the cover that accompanies it. The song lasts for over ten minutes, but it doesn’t come off as overtly dense nor stretched out. The moody riffing and the layers of synth create a perfect environment of the listener to get lost into, while the drumming, placed further away in the musical background, carries resemblance to a pulse of sorts. The vocal performance is also interesting, given that it varies between several techniques: high screeches, clean vocals, even some hints of DSBM style shrieks, albeit nowhere near as overt.
I think what impressed me most about this particular piece of music is that it blends elements of epic black metal with the darker sides of atmospheric black metal in a very organic way. There aren’t any abrupt changes in tone or atmosphere, due to the fact that the song structure is well rounded and clearly thought out. Nevertheless, that doesn’t make it any less impressive.
All this having been said, “Autumn Nerves” has definitely caught both my ear and my interest. Skadin have already announced an upcoming full length album, and I am quite curious of what lies ahead for this project. For now, though, I advise you to look into this song, as well as their other material. I have a feeling all this will lead to something special. 8.5/10
