Single Review: Nibiru Ordeal – The Explorer for #METALMOMENTUM by Elyna Steel
“The Explorer”, the new single by maestros Nibiru Ordeal , takes us on an intense power progressive journey beyond the known universe. Immerse yourself in this adventure and be part of humanity’s final mission to a new destination. By Elyna Steel
The powerful maestros of Finnish progressive power band Nibiru Ordeal bring us their eagerly awaited single “The Explorer” released today. This incredible work is the second instalment from their upcoming album “When The Worlds Collide”, following “Dreams Ain’t Real”, released on 13 July.
With the brilliant vocalist Andi Kravljaca at the helm, alongside the great composer and lyricist Pekka Laitinen on keyboards, Mirko Byman on guitars, Anssi Kinnunen on bass and the gigantic Vili Härkönen on drums, Nibiru Ordeal once again demonstrates with ‘The Explorer’ why they are one of the new forces in Finnish metal; deep lyrics, a devastating sound coupled with a majestic dose of interpretive talent, as well as their own musical personality and a rich mystical aura consistent with the narrative — like everything that comes out of Pekka’s mind.
“The Explorer” takes us on an exploratory journey into deep space aboard the largest rocket ever built. With a story inspired by major productions such as Sunshine and Interstellar, “The Explorer” depicts the apocalyptic scene of a world in ruins, which sends an exploration team beyond the known universe in the hope of finding a habitable planet for the human race. Even without certainty of success, and facing dangers and challenges — such as the cold vacuum— the brave pioneers go into the unknown on a decisive adventure for which they have prepared their entire lives, and on which the continuity of human life depends.
As for the sound achieved, the single is truly impressive. Janne Korpela’s mixing and Miro Kilski’s mastering only serve to highlight the majesty, beauty, and hopeful vibe of “The Explorer”. The clarity and volume of each layer allow each element to be distinguished in all its splendour. At the same time, the balance of the effects enhances the sound experience, evoking a journey of interstellar travel and discovery of other worlds, as full of magic as Angra’s “Carolina IV” was in its day.
In terms of structure, the intro to “The Explorer” is a spectacular keyboard solo that evokes Cocoon-style spaceship sounds, as the steady instrumentalisation that follows gives subtle vibes of Children of Bodom, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, and Helloween, with moments of silent guitar in the first verses that later integrate all the elements in a balanced and fluid way.

As a side note, and as an avid listener of the band, I must say that Nibiru Ordeal has its own sound, moving away from influences. All this is possible thanks to Byman’s intense and elegant riffs, the mighty rhythmic base of Kinnunen and Härkönen, and the magical and epic orchestrations achieved by Laitanen, which create a unique sonic experience that, to my ears, is novel and fresh, with the Nibiru Ordeal stamp throughout. On the other hand, the voice of maestro Andi Kravljača resonates with his characteristic impressive power, as well as providing sweet nuances and textures that add personality and a sense of authenticity to the story. It is as if his throat summons the voices of all the crew members of the ship, narrating their odyssey with emotion and hope.
Finally, ‘The Explorer’ is a cohesive and coherent track in terms of its lyrical and melodic relationship. It manages to create an atmosphere that fully matches the story. Far from those songs that seem to be made with AI, plastic, and unemotional, the melody and harmony of “The Explorer” complement the lyrics in such a way that the story of our brave star travellers becomes our own. It feels as if the listeners are participating in the mission to find a new home for humanity to the rhythm of a beautiful and intense melody and dreamlike voices.
Each element, each layer is perfectly combined with the others, making “The Explorer” more than just a single; it is a true sonic epic, a journey to the confines of the universe where anything is possible, where hope triumphs and where the power of Nibiru Ordeal leaves an indelible mark, motivating and stirring the adventurous spirit that each of us possesses, allowing us to overcome fear and dare to go beyond the confines of the unknown. 10/10
