Dolor Qui Animum Sublevat” is an EP by the Canadian ritual drone project Sublimatio Mortis, co-released by Noctivagant (CD) and Scarlet Kross (tape). Consisting of a single thirty-minute composition, “Clavis Mysteriorum” (The Key to the Mysteries), the atmosphere feels different from the soundscape of their previous release, “Transubstantiatio”. This time, Sublimatio Mortis invites the listener to participate in a transformative passage — a ritual of pain that elevates the soul.

The cover art visually embodies this philosophical journey. The skull, emblem of mortality and impermanence, confronts us with the certainty of death and the inevitable end of physical existence. Beneath it, the sword — a timeless symbol of truth, and purification — represents inner struggle, clarity, and transformation through pain. Encircling it, the crown of thorns evokes suffering and sacred endurance, a reminder that redemption and transcendence are born through pain.

The opening of “Clavis Mysteriorum” feels evocative, almost ceremonial — the listener is summoned into a sonic ritual where distant voices and resonant tones emerge from the depths of darkness. What at first appears terrifying soon reveals a strange familiarity, as though this darkness were not external but a reflection of our own inner abyss. The music becomes a mirror of the subconscious, guiding the listener to confront the shadows within. As the composition unfolds, the listener gradually dissolves into the atmosphere, losing distinction between observer and participant. Around the ten-minute mark, the structure shifts: the rhythm grows more intricate, the textures deepen, and new layers of resonance appear.

As the composition progresses, the voice begins to rise as a manifestation of the soul’s ascent. It embodies the acceptance of pain as something inevitable, even sacred, signaling readiness for the next stage along the path of transformation. Toward the closing minutes, the atmosphere begins to soften. The once-dense textures loosen, as if the ritual were reaching its benediction — a calm before release. Then, abruptly, the sound turns harsh again, culminating in a sudden void. The silence that follows feels absolute: we are cast out of the ecstatic state, returning to the realm of the ordinary. 8.5/10
