Welcome to a new edition of Metal Momentum, the sacred space of new singles from the metal realms. 

Finland has done it again, offering the world an endearing sample of one of their new melodic metal powerhouses: Dyecrest and their single “Unravel Me.” It is their third release, after “Failed One” and “Dreaming of Vengeance.”

“Unravel Me” was released with a music video on 21 October via Art Gates Records. It was directed by Sami Romppainen and filmed by Lasse Hartikainen. Both created an audiovisual gem that faithfully portrays the message of the lyrics.

The band’s current line-up consists of the talented Heidi Aaltonen on lead vocals, along with Matti Pasanen on guitar and backing vocals, Pirkka Ohlis on guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals, Henri Arola on guitar and backing vocals, Jukka Matilainen on bass, and Niko Takala on drums. This powerful line-up gives life and form to the beautiful song we will review today.

“Unravel Me” is a poignant ode to the chaos-balance duality that every human being goes through at some point in their passage through existence. It conveys a sense of internal fragmentation, akin to unravelling—unravelling—losing oneself within oneself. Verse after verse expresses the desire to free oneself from the chains of emotional pain that linger in the heart in a labyrinth that seems to have no way out. However, at some point in his life, the protagonist finds within himself the strength to rebuild himself, to emerge from the chaos and move from darkness to light.

In Finnish culture, that inner power has a name of its own: sisu. It is not just resilience; it is the ability to rebuild an entire identity from the shards left by adversity and pain, emerging as a new, different, and more powerful self. Ultimately, “Unravel Me” is a reflection of Finnish sisu, that strength that allows the protagonist —and whoever else needs it— to be reborn from the fire to return stronger, and ready to face whatever lies ahead.

As for the music, “Unravel Me” is an intense track, structured in a steady 4/4 time signature, at a slow-mid tempo, and composed in a minor key, which gives it a very melancholic and beautiful melodic metal ballad vibe.

Of particular note is the powerful drumming. Throughout the track, it provides a tapestry of epic storytelling, enhancing the narrative of struggle and transcendence. Also notable is the fluidity of the melodic line, which reminded me of Arch Enemy’s current magical sonority in the emotive two-part riffs. Meanwhile, the guitar solo also echoes melodic death and hints of neo-classical. It adds a layer of drama and elegance to the whole. The middle section features a keyboard bridge with hints of industrial metal, subtle enough to give the track a fresh feel.

The vocals, on the other hand, are an endearing experience. Heidi’s voice dazzles with its vocal power and evocative capacity, while the spectacular backing vocals, full of solemn masculine energy, are the perfect complement to a vocal display that balances the experience in a sort of perfect vocal yin/yang, where each voice finds its precise place in the development of the story and in the music of “Unravel Me.”

Finally, on a production level, the cut presents a sound of excellence — impeccable, powerful, and balanced. All the elements are mixed in such a way that none of them escapes or obscures the other. This work gives coherence to the lyrics, which themselves describe dualities that find balance, enhancing the dark beauty of the cut and providing a perfect third single from one of the main forces of the Finnish metal scene.

Thus, “Unravel Me” is a gem that deserves to be listened to with an open soul — a song and an ode to the Finnish sisu, that hidden but unstoppable force that allows man to take his pieces and rebuild himself. Dyecrest reminds us that fragility, chaos, and vulnerability can also be beautiful and unique by presenting them in a coherent, emotive musical frame and with the due share of passion that such an anthem deserves. 10/10
