Single Review: A Billion Limbs – “All Flesh to the Ground”: Madness, Evil, and the Last Chapter of a Journey Yet to Begin for #METALMOMENTUM by Elyna

“A Billion Limbs” unveils the final descent into madness with “All Flesh to the Ground,” a brutal end to a story whose beginning still lies ahead. “

From the darkest corners of Essex, U.K., British duo A Billion Limbs returns with a ferocious blast of pure death metal. What began as an instrumental project by Gary Sackman in 2013 took on a new form, when vocalist Chris Bone (Solstice Rider) joined in 2018, giving rise to the impressive debut album, “Absolute Horror.” Finally, and after years of thoughtful work, these guys return with the single “All Flesh to the Ground” , which was released independently on June 20th. This single is the first offering from their new concept album, whose name for now remains veiled. The song also serves as the final track, and a devastating prelude to what’s to come.

Mixed and mastered by the talented Emanuel Arzumanyan (Sonic Vision!), the story of “All Flesh to the Ground” reflects a heartbreaking and twisted tragedy set in the mind of a poor mortal on the brink of collapse.
The lyrics place us at the end of a cursed journey. A man has lost his family and is manipulated by a perverse force impersonating the voice of his dead wife. This leads him deep into the forest, where he digs the earth desperately seeking to reunite with her. But what he finds in the depths of the land is his own transmutation: buried like a seed of evil, a dark, malignant power germinates through him, corrupting everything around. Pandora’s box is unleashed, and evil spreads everywhere. “The seed forms roots and shoots its death above,” goes one of its most chilling lines, encapsulating the tragedy enough to be fully  understood. It is the consummation of madness; it is flesh surrendered to the earth and turned into evil, the point of no return.

“All Flesh to the Ground” is a devastating display of brutality that mercilessly pounds the brain, inciting you to throw yourself into the mosh pit with  devastating fury. Structured on a vibrant pulse that oscillates between mid and fast tempo, in 4/4 time, this piece stands out for its dense sonic texture, rich in nuances. Among them, the brutal syncopated bursts of riffs and rolls, the abrupt transitions between sections, and an elegant and precise use of effects such as delay stand out. The presence of polyrhythms further accentuates the oppressive and dark atmosphere of the track, immersing the listener in a whirlwind of perfectly articulated violence. This musical tapestry evokes diverse sounds and vibes that include Meshuggah, At the Gates, Sepultura, Slayer, Death Metal, and chilean band Sadism.

On the other hand, the sharp, killer voice evokes the hellfire and abysmal roars characteristic of Amon Amarth, Hypocrisy, Suffocation, and Pestilence. Still, Chris Bone shines brightly thanks to his precise vocal attack and ferocious phrasing that empowers each line with authority and brutality. This whole package creates a demolishing listening experience for fans of A Billion Limbs—and death metal in general.

Personally, “All Flesh to the Ground” brought back fond memories of my early days as a metalhead. Yes, guys, power metal wasn’t always my thing. Before I encountered the epic and melodic landscapes of that genre I love, death and thrash metal were my first refuges, where I found myself trying to understand—and cope with—this strange world. Carcass, Morbid Angel, Death, Sepultura, Slayer, Obituary, among many other bands, forged the foundation of my musical identity long before power metal became the path that defined my life experience. A Billion Limbs took me on a retrospective journey to my origins as a metalhead. I walked again alongside my friends of yesteryear, where dressing in black, a leather jacket full of patches and studs, and high-top white sneakers was the equivalent of donning a warrior’s outfit ready for battle in the mosh pit. And where, no matter how twisted the world seemed, extreme metal was always home, refuge, and union between peers.

Long story short, “All Flesh to the Ground” is the first taste of an album that not only marks the brutal return of A Billion Limbs, but also invites us to immerse ourselves in the final chapter of a dark, intense, and intricate story. It’s the prelude to a conceptual album that promises to drag us into the abyss, unleashing Pandora’s box from the twisted roots of the forces of evil.

It’s a track that also has the power to revive a personal journey—one that takes me back to the very roots of why I fell in love with extreme metal in the first place, before I married power metal.
So, if this is the final page of the story, the entire journey will be simply apocalyptic. 9/10
