Album Review: Blood Brain Barrier – Windows Drenched in Red by Michelle

The album’s cover artwork depicts a creepiness that’s oddly comforting, the title ‘Windows Drenched in Red’ being accurate with the way it is represented. But leaving aesthetics aside, the way this album starts is pretty harsh and straightforward because of the absence of an intro of some sort. Still, the heavy riffs and pick scrapes make up for it with the way they’re put together. Overall, ‘Testing the Waters‘ has a pretty sorrowful aspect to it while still fusing softer elements like the guiat solo from around the first and a half minute.

The second melody, ‘Windows Drenched in Red’, has more rythmicness to it, with the drums almost taking the lead here. At some point the song takes a sudden stop before a calm instrumental starts, and what I definetely did not expect were the clean vocals which I found absolutely beautiful and melancholic with the way they’re combined with the guitars. The growls join in aswell, creating a really balanced ambience which I really enjoyed.

‘Seek Nothing Destroy Everything’ starts pretty calm, though a riff quickly makes its way in as they’re joined by the vocals shortly after. I really enjoyed the palm muting that’s present in multiple timestamps accompanied with the way the drums are synced aswell.

The last track, ‘Desire to be Thoughtless’ takes on a more doomy approach with its intro, the gloominess of it being highly accentuated before the riffs themself start. The heaviness of them is pretty raw and enjoyable to listen to, which only makes me like this record even more.

To be more precise, the 23 minutes listening to this mini album were really well-spent, and I’d definetely say to check it out if you like diversity in riffs and vocals. While this is something I wouldn’t listen to on a daily basis, I definetely did enjoy the most of what Blood Brain Barrier has to offer. 9/10
