Album Review: Inquisitors of Darkness – Kingdom of the Sightless God by Sílvia

“Kingdom of the Sightless God” is the debut album by the Chilean band Inquisitors of Darkness, a symphonic Black Metal band consisting only of two members, Vjort (in charge of all the instrumental stuff) and Grindor (doing all vocals). From the orchestral intro, I was already expecting an album full of epic and triumphant moments, and believe me, there are plenty of these.

Instead of being lost in complicated melodies, keyboards are used as an atmospheric background for the music played by the other instruments. Sometimes playing repeatedly just a few notes along with the guitars and drums, some others creating an eerie melody in which your mind wanders in search of some lost kingdom… but always sounding amazing and with a kind of splendor.

Guitars play plenty of melodies, with a very good bass resonating behind, and drums can go from mid tempos to sudden outbursts, increasing the sensation of a close threat. And, truth is that keyboards often mislead me, ‘cause in my head I’m imagining some epic scenes not that dark as the ones that are told in the lyrics. For example in “The First Curse”: those triumphant synths are like depicting a brilliant moment, for me; but in fact, it’s a chapter about a raging curse that brings decay, rotting and death. Well, Black Metal lyrics indeed, nothing to complain about!

“In the Name of the Light” is a “delicious” story of bloodshed claiming a land… with a part in the middle that brings you to the battlefield, those sounds of clashing swords, galloping horses and the clamor of hundred voices… It’s powerful and at the same time, devastating.

Vocals usually are angry raspy screams, but there are also impressive deep growls, and all are done by Grindor, so he is versatile in this aspect. Sometimes the two kinds of vocals are put together and the result is fantastic.

The first time I listened to the album I thought the lyrics were about a mysterious and fantasy kingdom with wizards, magic and so. But after reading the lyrics, I realized it’s about a land full of darkness, where a final judgement brings evil and horrors from Hell… There’s no salvation, it’s the end of everything, and at the same time the beginning of the end, in an eternal cycle of destruction. The songs drag the listener into the insanity of the stories that are being told, a macabre descent to bloody battlefields where evil forces win and mankind is destroyed and led to suffer torment and divinity’s wrath. Slaying, bloodshed, horrors, devastation.

A great album to enjoy if you like Symphonic Black Metal with ambient keyboards that are used in a good measure. 8/10
