Album Review: Wulkanaz – Luftuz via Helter Skelter Productions by Michelle

This album is the definition of don’t judge a book by its cover. Why? Well, the cover artwork made me think I would listen to some Blasphemy-type war metal, but it seems like I was wrong because of the lofi sounding instrumental and extreme distortsion of the vocals. Meaning “cloud” in proto-germanic, Wulkanaz‘ ‘Luftuz’ truly stood out to me from other albums reviewed because of the way I found all songs pretty catchy, in a way that I did not get bored a single bit while listening to this record.

It pretty much blew my mind when I started with the first track ‘Hokvind’, because like I said earlier, I did not expect a ‘clean’ sounding instrumental. Instead, it is the vocals that are heavily distorted, but obviously in a pretty enjoyable way I’d say. The whole album itself is a rollercoaster of rawness and even creepyness in a way. An example would be the intro of ‘Do af bote lia’, the soundtrack sounding straight out of a horror movie.

I liked how the instrumental keeps its bounciness throughout the length of the album, because I find this aspect really important in the quality of a record. I also found ‘Rydning’ quite interesting because of the lack of vocals and introduction of a synthesizer that I find hard to explain the sound of. It’s pretty similar to what brutal death metal act Fulci uses from the horror movie samples, but either way this feature is something I really appreciate.

So, even for just a span of 35 minutes this album’s rawness stood out to me in an instant. I’d definetely recommend it to those looking for some lo-fi and synth aspects because I really think this artist deserves the attention. 9/10
